Started a new thread with regards to my non starting issue,
ive tested the glow plugs with a multi meter, Positive end on the plug and negative on the negative terminal of the battery and im not getting any reading whatsoever while they should be heating when the key is in position 2. Also no in tank fuel pump running it seems. Is this an immobilizer issue? where is isolates these 2 items? how do i know if the immobilizer has been disengaged? How can i test if the fuel pump is getting current without having the fuel tank out? Looks like its going to be an auto electricans job me thinks.
thanks
josh

How did you try testing the fuel pump?? With the key on method or the lead from the battery to the relay socket method??

EDIT: This is what im referring to (this is part of the TSB on poor starting when hot found in RAVE)

These steps are for checking the fuel pump is giving out enough fuel etc to allow correct starting, I would assume you could use it to check that fuel is def coming from the tank.

EDIT 2: When checking the glow plugs did you disconnect them from their power supply and then measure the end of the plug - thats how it reads?? :/ I would disconnect glow plugs and then, in turn, put a positive probe on the feed wires and a negative on the battery and then measure what you get when you turn the ignition on.

Is the injector light showing when you turn on to the second stage of the ignition?? (its on the right of the glow plug lamp)

Ive performed the above tests.

The pump worked when i did this but doesn't pump when the key is in position 2, im guessing its regulated when the injector pump is empty (which it isn't) so doesn't need to activate the in tank pump.

The glow plug light does come on the dashboard for a few seconds when the key is in position 2, however i disconnected a wire from a glow plug, connected +ve of multimeter to it and -ve to the neg on the battery and put the key in position 2 and there is no current flowing along it, so that looks to be the culprit, whats the likely cause of no power to the glowplugs? is there a fuse/relay and a way to test?
thanks for the help so far

so no 12 volts at all to the glow plugs even when the light is on?? The power to the glow plugs is controlled via a control unit that housed in the same unit as the engine control module, see below...

I would have this relay/control unit out and look for any sings of visible damage. It looks in the ETM that it has a fuse on it, have it out and see. While its out I would check continuity along each glow plug wire.

Do you have a copy of RAVE?? You really want a copy of RAVE with the ETM as this will help you lots and lots with diagnosis of electrical problems, get it from RangeRovers.net :: View topic - RAVE Download - comes with free beer! or green-oval.

Just a quick question, how much water damage did this P38 receive?? Im wondering if something has got shorted out somewhere or maybe corrosion in cables etc.

See what the glow plug control unit turns up and get that copy of RAVE! :)

Keep us updated!

thankyou,

ive checked mine out and i have a big timer relay fitted outside the ecu box, possibly a hot starting fix in the past. basically had the same done as this.

Range Rover BMW Diesel Hotfix Instructions

im going to go and check to see where im getting current and where im not, but i suspect its this replacement timer relay that isn't clicking on.

Right its fired now :):):):)
The Large aftermarket relay isn't clicking on when starting but i removed the cover and clicked it by hand and it starts now. Only ran it for a second as ive got all the radiators and hoses still to fit.
thanks
josh

thanks ever so much for your help so far. Ill be downloading the manuals but its space on my computer thats the problem, anyone got them on discs? ive got some money in paypal if you have.
regards
josh

glad you have got it started!

Get some pics online so we can see it now... :D:)

How far off finishing are you do you think?? Are you going to remove the hot starting fix and see how it is or are you going to keep with it and replace the relay thats broken??

Ill get some pics up as soon as possible, going on holiday tomorrow night so im not really going to have time, Im quite close to finishing now, just noticed i need a couple of exhaust mani gaskets so going to go and try and grab some tomorrow. Just installing all the rads now, hooked the intercooler up as well. Might take a couple of sneaky pics tomorrow as i might work on it outside.

oh any ideas on what oil i need for the Manual gearbox? and the capacity?
thanks

cool :)

looking through RAVE the oil specified for the manual box is Texaco MTF 94 and filling it from dry will be roughly 2.7 litres.

Have you also checked out the transfer box and diffs to make sure no water has made its way into those areas??
