Well, got news on my Rangie today. The techie says my block and head are warped and that both need skimming. He also said that the work carried out may not last along time or it may do another 140,000 miles, who knows.
And all this to the sound of £1750, is it worth the risk or do I just source another motor?
Any advice would be much apprieciated.

is it diesel or petrol if diesel get another lump but dont worry about a range lump bm or omega engines are sound i put omega engine in myself just change sump and pick up pipe these are a third of the price as range rover breakers price ,1750 seems mega money any way petrol or diesel even so some gaurentee must be implied or the repairer is not the right one to be messing with a range rover

hiya mate , i reckon your "techy guys" is taking the **** !!!!!!! for that sort of cash i`d want some sort of warranty , my 4.6 threw the towel in earlier this year and i sourced a brilliant motor from a 4x4 breakers in yorkshire it cost me £1250.00 outright which is a damn sight less than what your guys are talking .

Hi Allsorts,
Bad luck
Did it just fail or have you had symptoms for some time ?
May help others if we know how it happened.
Sounds a lot of money, can you do any of the work yourself.

It just developed a faint ticking noise that myself and a few others said sounded like the exhaust manifold gasket. After a few more miles the ticking noise became a very loud compression sort of noise.
Basically it had blown a section of the head gasket out of the side, the guy working on my RR said it had warped the head and block, yet another engine remanufacturer that I deal with through work said that there is no way he can check this with the engine in situe. He also added that in all the years he has been working on engines, especially rover V8's, he's never come accross a warped block.
So, anyway, assuming the worst I did some delving on the internet, mainly eBay and came up with a rebuilt short block for £2495 and a rebuilt complete engine for £2890. The funniest thing is they turned out to be at the garage that's working on my RR.
I can't help but think they are just trying to flog me something I don't need........

I've seen this happen on a 4.2 when a liner had moved. Replacement block cost around £800.

Sorry to hear you are having bad luck with the motor. I have been there and spent the money. With all the grief of pulling the old lump out I decided to fit a new short engine from Autopost and use my old heads which I refurbished with new rocker shafts, rockers and push rods-dirt cheap!!
Obviously cash is always a problem, but I went for a new lump instead of second hand with the V8's reputation , as second hand is always an unknown quantity and pulling a V8 out ain't no joke-once is enough!! since the refit-over 12 months ago, still running sweet as a nut. By the way, heard of heads warping, but never blocks.
At the end of the day the decision on which way to go is yours.:) :) :) :)

i reckon the garage who told you about the wrapped block/heads are geniuses.

how else can they know the heads are wrapped without putting a straight edge across them, the most common reason for wrapped heads is if it has overheated! if it hasn't i would think you have no immediate worry, pull the heads and check them as matter of course as normal............

hiya allsorts , my opinion of your garage remains unchanged mate i think they are p*ssing up your back at trying to tell you its raining .
get a second opinion of a decent garage with v8 experiance mate .

Thanks for all your support and words of wisdom. My biggest problem now is do I move it on or keep it?
I'd love to keep it as I have a lot of money in it and I love, though I only had the chance to drive it twice!
If I do keep it and it happens again X amount of days down the line, I can't afford to put it right again..........AAAARRRGGHHHH!!!!!!!!
Oh well, carry on with life I suppose!

Well, finally got it back just over a month after taking it in and yes, the head gasket would appear to be fixed but I now have 2 other problems.

The gas isn't working but was when it went in. It used to change over from petrol to gas on its own after a few seconds or after the accelerator was blipped. Now I have to press the button and when I do it stalls unless I'm moving but does stall when I come to a stop. Also when I put my foot down nothing happens.

The other problem is the EAS, it was going up into extended height mode as and when it felt like it and now it's on the bump stops.

When will the madness end?

Here, use these and give it a Viking funeral ;)
