Started a pre winter refurb of the chassis today, gave it all a good scrape and wire brush a power jet and got it all clean and its all very nice and solid under there , gave it all a spray with fertan (stuff of the gods for rust and steel ) and have to leave 24/48 hrs, next job is to paint/underseal it

any recomendations on what to use ?

was thinking this stuff, used it before on other cars and found it good

1LT Hammerite Underbody Underseal with Added Waxoyl

thoughts ?

if anyones not used fertan- its sold at chandlery places and used for boats, best rust treatment/prevention stuff ive found and highly regarded by the classic car community, amazing stuff, sorts any rust and surface rust back to metal and paint over, or can be left as it is, good for spraying inside chassis parts aswell before waxoyling inside

I wouldn't bother with the hammerite paint it can crack and trap moisture making the situation worse. Use something with lots of zinc in it to paint your chassis like Bonda primer.
I've heard good reports of fertan although I've not used it myself.
I like the underbody shield with waxoyl used it on a number of cars and never been disappointed with the results, although I use a schutz gun to apply it rather than a brush

ive used fertan before on my other cars its top stuff and also reacts really well with water and recomended to, to get right in any gaps and nooks etc, and also when painted over it gives a lasting rust proofing/prevention, the chassis is very good anyway with only very minimal bits of surfase rust here and there, so by the time im finished il know its good for winter and drive in any conditions

are there any zinc paints i can find locally today ? i could give it a paint with that then the underbody waxoyl stuff over the top to give a real good protection, although i have also used that stuff before on floor pans and under arches of cars and thats also good on its own like that, but with painting also under it will be better when jet washing it

hammerite would be as good a paint as any i use it regulary and stuff rusts less for longer with it ,zinc primer is good ,and waxoyl after

been thinking about this and jsyt off to halfrauds to get some bits

the chassis is good and painted, its not like its bare, and was only the odd bit of minimal surface rust, ie just on either end of the rear cross member type bit on the corners ,and on the rear diff type bit that goes right across with the big round bit, and on the air cylinder, very slight, and thats mainly it, no actual "flakey" rust anywhere, so im going just wack some zinc primer over them bits thats, then use the underbody seal over it all, and should be good to go

your better off top coating with black paint after priming with zinc hammerite is better than most then waxoyl under seal etc

what sort of black paint tho ?

the chassis isnt an old crusty chassis and its been looked after, so its more just topping it up giving it a winter coat to protect, not a full refurb as such, so dont need to paint the whole chassis

personally being as you say it's not that rusty and you've treated it i would use the zinc primer, any kind will do spray or brush then i'd use some proper chassis black paint over the top as it doesn't crack and has a smoother finish which stops crud sticking to it as much it isn't expensive only about a tenner a litre i think. that's all i did to mine 3 years ago and after lots of laning and drowning it in fords there isn't a spot of rust on the outside of the chassis as yet.

crikey what a day, but a worth while day , had a good look at it all after yesterdays jet wash and fertan, and the chassis was still nice and black painted with just the odd small area really needing any attention, after yesterdays fertan it was all good to go,another quick wire brush and cinema 3d glasses as eye protection :D , i went with the hammerite underbody seal with added waxoyl to just give it that extra coat, done 90% of the chassis, all the rear boot(spare wheel) floor pan and all the sides and side floor pans, chassis, the lot, its looking super and feel glad i made thew effort

just got to finish a few bits tomorrow, done as much as i can do without a ramp but its all nice and protected for winter, in doing all this it was also a good inspection of the chassis and theres no rot or proper rusting anywhere

only thing that had any proper rust was the side step frames, its had a good fertain and painted, and will last them out for another year or 2, but really i could do with some new side steps at some point
