my god ... thats some heavy reading ..

i've got a 1995 p38 with what looks like this very same problem ..

abs light takes a while to go out in the morning .. pedal some times has immediate brakes or at other times has a longer travel with a very spongy feel, like there is no assistance to the braking

the kit lists for a 4.0 and 4.6 ... does anyone know if the modulator is different on a 2.5dt, can't see it being much different really ...

any help appreciated

The kit covers the diesel version, the USA never had the BMW diesel engine as an option, Rover Renovations are the agents for the kits in the USA.

I ordered my kit direct from Russell in Australia the guy who identified the problem and produces the kit, I paid $99 AUS Dollar (40.00 GBP) incl airmail postage to the UK.

ABS light does take a little while to go out, you have to excess 5 mph for the light to extinguish.

I have the same problem with the intermitant pedal travel

i've only had the rangey a few months and thought it was a fluid problem ..but i'll do this just as a precaution anyway ..

it just shows how useful you guys are on the forum ..

It appears there are no special tools required to install the kit according to the information/write up, only general tools.

However Russell who produces the the kit does say that people should allow up to 2 days to complete the installation including bleeding the brake system, some people have reported completing the job in 12 hours.

Depends more on people mechancial ability and being careful, as its stated in the linked thread that you can damage some of the brake modulators parts beyond repair.

I personally think with the possible implications for safety it should be a sticky in "Range Rover" (as I asked for above) how many people would search Q&A for "Possible Brake Failure" or bother looking in Q&A at all.

PS. Who are the mods for this site anyway???

I can understand what you are saying and why, but I would prefer it placed a section specific to the vehicle due to the possible consequences of injury, if a vehicle totally lost its brakes.


Also there is more chance of it being read than if placed in Q&A, after all if I'd just crashed my pride and joy I wouldn't be happy, if I then found a possible warning in Q&A.

Sorry to bring this back to life but I have this problem and have ordered the kit from Russell. Could I ask any members who have done the mod whether there have been any problems since please.

I've not had any problems since installing the kit, take your time, follow the instructions be very clean and careful.

Buy yourself a 5 litre can of brake fluid from a motor factors and change all the fluid in the system.

Read then re-read the brake bleeding section in RAVE and understand it fully with your helper.

thanks so much for the prompt response and advice. I have ordered a second hand (supposedly good) brake modulator from a breakers to implement the repair/upgrade on plus a new pressure switch (may as well change everything), have already replaced all the breaklines and refurbed the calipers and fitted new accumulator; bleeding was a pain first time but having been through it once its less dauntuing second time around. Rangie is off the road anyway until I get this fixed. cheers M

How much are the replacement parts int he UK? I notice he's in Aus and the post is a good 6 years old. Can you get the replacement parts here?

This has got me worried my 3 lights flicker when I hit the brakes on my p38 that I only bought at the weekend didnt notice till I drove it in the dark.

My p38 has been fine since fitting this kit,2 or 3 years ago now..

What is this spam !!! No kit just a survey ...

Having contacted the local stealer who wanted £3K!!!! for a new unit, and various other internet offerings in the £1500-£2000 range it was a choice between another second hand unit (which may end up having the same fault anyway) or see if he is still in business.

I couldnt find anywhere in the UK that offered the kit so found the guy via his website in Australia(Rangeroversolutions - note I have no connection to him and am not endorsing his products in anyway), he very responsive to email and kit is still available but now $155 aus via paypal including shipping .... so £45 for secondhand unit + £106 for the kit, some enjoyment in refurbing rather than just throw away .... sounds like a bargain, and from the feedback from you guys, sounds as if its works.

Danwol - Im not an expert by anymeans but the reason I changed my accumulator was to cure the 3 lights coming on when braking. The modulator issue is connected with a click or clicking when you apply the brakes (no lights come on with my Rangie)

If anyone is interested in how this pans out let me know and I will update.

I was in this situation, I tried a 2nd hand unit but it failed after several hundreds Km. I also contacted this Australian fellow, very quick to reply and help but since I am not handy with tools he offered me to rebuild a new unit for me. Unfortunately we has too busy and I could not wait any longer and decided ordered a new unit (Year 2008) form a UK online store and get it shipped to me within a few days.

This problem has been now fixed.
