Half shafts are of fully floating type so some movement expected although there is usually a shim washer between hub and circlip.

Check the 6 bolts that hold on the axel driver flange. This has happened on mine so I need to either tap new threads and go up a bolt size (bodge) or replace the hub.

I guess it depends on how far back you can go!

Could be similar to the disco from the same era, if they over heated the fan would switch as a safety measure. But unfortunately the disco required plugging to a diagnostic computer to reset the system controlling the fan.

You are missing a cap. You should have a Salisbury axle. Hard to break the half shafts on those....
