    Did it actually turn the engine over when you tried to start it. Worth cleaning up all live and earth connections on engine, chassis starter and solenoid to shiny bright. Can you remove solenoid, disassemble, clean and bench test

    I've also been recommended this, see below, what do you think? "Personally I'd go for an agm battery. They last longer than conventional ones and don't drain as quick. If this will start a 3.6 tdv8 then your choice is plenty man enough"

    Bit like the headlamps at work. If the dipped or main beam goes, you just replace the bulb. but if the side light goes, they are LED built into the lamp and you have to replace the whole unit. Stoopid.

    I haven't worked on a 101, but your symptoms do seem to point to a bad earth and/or the starter solenoid - that's the part that makes the click sound that you're hearing.
