My old 2.5 autobox gave up and I've just swapped it with a hp44 065 box which I was told was a straight swap, when I tried to drive it, it made clunking noises and would only move slightly when manually selecting 1st gear.
On top of this I got a stall speed error fault

The diesel bell housing and torque converter have been swapped onto the 065 box so it is a bolt on job.

Anyone have any insight into this?

There is a risk the oil pump could not have been engaged properly?? Never done this one. Unless the replacement was faulty before hand...

I'm thinking the replacement box I've got is knackered, another 500 quid down the drain. Thought putting the hp24 would strengthen the reliability

Doesn't strengthen reliability, Mines been on its original hp22 sine 1999 and 220.000 miles... It's an upgrade you may never see the real benefit of unless you tow in a professional capacity. The hp24 was used in the almighty torque monster V8 and needed to stop the beast tearing butt holes in the hp22.
