Yellow Knob?

My yellow Knob isnt working?

When I push it down, nothing happens. I dont think its engaging properly.

What can I check eaisley or what can I do to fix the problem?

Nothing happens? What are you expecting to happen? I am assumng that 4WD isn't engaging? Does it work in low box?

Do you have freewheeling hubs?
If you do make sure you have locked them

first off, if it feels loose or rattles about, is the spring slack ??? take off the b/box tunel and check the pin and joint , see if the linkage has dropped to bits, as above , check free wheelers, when did it stop workin?

Use a jack to lift one of the front wheels off the ground. Check that 4WD engages and dissengages as it should. When in 4WD you should not be able to rotate the front wheel more than a few degrees. If 4WD is not dissengaging try pulling up on the yellow knob when pushing the transfer lever forward and see if that helps. There should be a spring over the 4WD plunger which pushes up on the yellow knob. Perhaps it's missing or the lower spring retainer is missing or damaged. Another possibility is that the linkage (under the floor) for the 4WD plunger is damaged or has been jammed by debris or even seized up with corrosion. I think it's probably possible to inspect the linkage from underneath without pulling the floor up.

Worst case scenario is that there is a broken spring or some other damage inside the transfer box, but I've never had to mess with that. I think it's likely that if there is an internal gearbox problem then it should be possible to fix it without pulling the gearbox out.

if you can manage to get the drivers floor out better working from top this weather, there is a cover on the end of the front output housing that covers the shafts, this can be undone with 3 small bolts and pulled forward a bit you will see the end of the 4wd shaft, when the yellow know is pressed it lifts the pin out of the locating hole in shaft and shaft should move forward under spring pressure, if it dosent it could be siezed as fenby says , clean the ends and try puilling it out with pliers, if it comes out the transfer lever will move it back into place can be locked with the 4wd pin

my transfer box was messing around the other week
i could get 4wd but when i pulled the lo back it wouldnt go all the way then wouldnt go back to high all this stuck in a muddy field gave it a kick and got high

striped the box and found corrsion all around the end of the hi/lo selecter shaft, cleaned everything up and put it back together all fine now took about 9 hours

To clear things up;

- No Free Wheeling Hubs

- 4x4 works a treat in low

- 4x4 will not engage in high range

When I push the yellow knob down 4x4 will engage for about 10 feet and then it will jump out.

The cover around the selector at the front of the transfer box is as bent as Graham Norton.

Im not sure where I cen get a new one of these as I expect this is the problem.

Maybe one of you guys has one on a spare box that you want to sell me?

I did have a problem with it jumping out of high range all together, It seemed to have been bent forward thus not allowing te red lever to push home. With a big bit of bar I bent the lever back and this has sorted the problem, the 4x4 in high will also stay engaged for little longer since this modification.

a bit pricey , you can remove them i think it was only the later models have them on , it would confirm your thoughts anyway,

the rubber gasket on the transfer lever can also make it jump out of gear
