X-eng disc brake

I know this thread is a bit old but just fitted x eng hand brake and since then there has been a severe rattle - looked up google and downloaded a fix which said the pads were loose and had to be silicone sealed back in place - rattle still there after doing just that - I know its the x eng because when stationary and I apply the hand brake the rattle stops - the noise is starting to do my head in - has anyone any ideas on this - spoke to suppliers and they said it was the pads or the transfer box - but the transfer box is virtually new from Ashcrofts and did not make the noise before the x eng fitted - thinking of putting the drum back on!!.

Did you ever get anywhere with this ?

I just ordered one and I am having second thoughts. I don't off road much but I am sick of stripping my hand brake and still having it not work as its a pain in the backside to do. Last time took me an age to get the springs back in.
So I just opted for the X BRAKE

@ER1C I run an X-brake now, fantastic bit of kit. Got it second hand, with loose pads and yes, it rattled. Bought new pads, fitted, siliconed and job's a good 'un. Even the rattle would have been OK because the performance of it as a handbrake is phenominal, especially when wet or muddy and especially offroad.

It's basically a JCB caliper and a mounting plate with a disc .. so easy to strip and regrease or replace parts, and so simple it almost can't go wrong unless something breaks. Simple cam operation works a single pad, the other is relatively fixed with slight caliper movement on bushes. The pad movement is worked by turning a shaft with the cam being three ramps which captive steel balls are rolled up, with a big F off spring to return the lever and cam to rest position. It's a doddle to adjust the cable too. No idea of lengevity of brake pads, but can't see it being bad and they're cheap and cheerful anyway .. :)

I run my Landy quite hard, it's always (it is right now) in bits 'cos I either broke something or decided to change something, but I wouldn't hesitate in replacing a brand new Defenders handbrake with the X-eng right from brand new, it's 'that' good .. :)

Fitted 1 few months back. Just make sure they are set up right. My lock nuts were not set right on the pads & rattled loose. Once reset I cannot find fault with it. Even parked on hill after water crossing I was impressed .
Fitted this as the old handbrake was U/S on transfer box upgrade.

Series and Defender X-Brakes are different.

Incidentally ... the Defender/whatever pads from X-Eng are £40+ .. I got mine from ebay, a company calle abelparts, ebay No 251622991006 or similar, at less than a tenner .. but also spotted them for sale at £5 ... ;)

Thanks for that Paul, Its here so I will fit it.. I did read a warning about don't winch with it on.... is that overkill safety ?
I would always try and chock wheels but usually stick the hand brake on as well.

I don’t recall reading anything about not using it for winching. Do you have a link?

I have an X-Brake on my 88 (build thread link in my sig with pics). It is much better than the drum in terms of reliable brake performance. Even if you have a bit of an oil leak. It does rattle a bit when applied though. I’m running a Tdi also, which doesn’t help in this regard.

FYI winching

In my view, and this is just an opinion, they're covering themselves as the tyres will usually slide when locked up anyway!

When I'm winching I usually do it from a switch in the cab with my feet on the brake pedal .. Or when on my own I use a wireless remote, obviously with no brakes on! ;)

Thinking about it, and sitting here with the picture above of an X-brake, I wonder if the issue is a function of the length of the pivot formed from the caliper, via the spacer tubes, to the bracket mount creating almost a force multiplier effect. Yes, it's 1/4" or so metal and bent for rigidity, but it is a heavyish vehicle.

I'd still use it for winching, but not for stopping except in emergency, only when stopped already. ;)
