Freelander 2 (LR2) Wrong oil?

My freelander 2 is a NON dpf model 2008.

I am under the impression that I need the C1 grade (to ford spec 913-b or c)

Basically what I am asking is, does it really matter what exact type of oil it is because I've just spent £45 on oil from a listing on eBay that advertised it as the correct oil for the car.

I change the oil every 365 days without fail and it will do about 10k in that time.

Surely it won't cause any damage? It's not like there is a DPF to clog up!

I defer to my brother on this one who has been an engineer with LR for probably about 30 years now. He came over to visit and we'd be traveling round the island a lot, so gave the D1 V8 a service when he got here. As I was about to put the oil in, he said, "you do know you've bought oil for a diesel?". So I looks at the tub and sure enough it say diesel engine oil. Oh I says, what do you recon I should do - to which he says "well it'll be better than nothing at all" - so in it went, and off we went and it stayed in there till the next service
