Would you buy a CAT S 90?

Hi guys, I have seen a nice 90 hatdtop which caught my eye. Everything looks good and solid with no welding patches r anything, engine all well and serviced regularly the only problem is it is a CAT S but had all genuine parts and work done top notch,but just made me think Nnnoooo!
Has anybody had experience or bought a CAT S one n just peoples opinions on the subject. I’m not pursuing it until I’ve had a think. But other people’s input always helps.

Cat S have to be re-registered don’t they?

I personally wouldn’t not for something as common as a LR, but others maybe happy with this

Is it cheap? Or at least cheaper than a non cat s equivalent?

Genuine parts, dunt cat S mean significant crash damage involving the chassis which can be put back on the road if repaired properly. It’s a tough one.

I suppose if it’s had a new chassis and new body panels not much of relevance has been carried over?

Would have to be very cheap though.

Cat s repaired nope id no walk away, youd be better buying one damaged an doing the work yourself
then youd know it was repaired correctly, that's if you have the tools space & funds if not send me the link I could do with a new project.

This I completely agree with. Theoretically a cat s repaired should be no different to a normal defender that has had a rebuild, galv chassis etc, but I do not trust others to do the work correctly or use quality parts. the other part as pointed out by others is the cat s follows the vehicle. so when you come to resell you will be reselling as a cat s. because of this future buyers will have the same dilemmas you are having now and therefore I would, as mentioned above, expect the price to be lower than market value despite the work done just because it has the cat s recorded against it.

Thanks for the comments. This is what I was thinking aswell. It’s proving very hard to find a 90 or 110 that’s has been looked after around the 10k mark and have been searching for some time. Just been checking the same places but nothing really popping out are seeming decent. Anybody know if I’m missing something or searching the wrong places getting slightly frustrating

Think it’s just that the values have gone a bit daft. Could consider a disco I guess?

I’ve heard there a different kettle of fish altogether even though they are a defender on a different body, same goes with them aswell getting something decent is gonna be top dollar.

Depends what you want it for really. A disco is a nicer place to be but not as utilitarian and if what you really want is a defender it’s obviously not that.

I’ve seen plenty of 110s around £8k on Facebook market place unless they are cons.

They to rot amazingly well, the downside is most disco owners treat them as cars and dont give them the extra tlc they need to keep them in decent nick.

Discos much nicer drive/place to be than any defender, but you dont get that special feeling you get with a defender.
Rough rule of thumb is, disco 1/2 the price of same age defender sometimes even more difference.
Discos dont ag well looks wise all models/versions

But the biggest bonus is, no one wants to steal the disco!

lf the CAT S has been properly repaired it should be OK
l would want to see a new chassis and also who had done the work on it.
lt would also be good to know what damage was done, it could have been water damaged and not crashed at all.
Obviously it won't be worth as much so the price should reflect its status.
Defenders can be written off for fairly minor damage, because original parts are in some cases not available, and the insurance won't repair it.
