I am considering purchasing a 2001 discovery 2 with 135000 miles. It has the 4.0L lump in it and is going for $4000. I don't do a lot of miles but I am worried about the miles (not high for US standards - my Jeep has 225K) given the checkered history of these engines.
Would you take the gamble or walk away?

Great engine I believe if looked after. I've just done 98000 miles on mine and had no mechanical issues in the three years that I've had it. Just tempted fate there. However it does get regularly serviced which includes gear box front rear diff oil all filters etc etc. Hope the engine will be fine for many more years. Some people here will probably say that I have just run my engine in!

Thanks Grahame
I had a couple of the 4.6 version previously but bolted in to P38's. I'm assuming the Disco is lighter which maybe easier on the engine. Normally I wouldn't bat an eyelid at an engine with 135K on it but its hard to find one here that has done much more which makes me think they just die. Its also hard to find one with a service history so trying to figure out if they have been cooked is tough.

Try going on Facebook and search for land rover discovery owners. There is many pictures of the speedometer with miles in excess of 150,000. For what it's worth I've never enjoyed driving a vehicle as much as my disco 2.
