Workshop crane really needed???

So my new R380 gearbox just arrived from Ashcroft and I'm now doing some research for the swap procedure.

According to Haynes manual it's recommended to use a workshop crane inside the vehicle as well as a jack underneath.

Does anyone have "hack" instead of using a crane? (since I have to rent one in that case)

Thanks

Last time I did one on a 110 I drove it up onto blocks to get another 4" underneath it. Then used a crane to lower the combined gearbox and transfer box down onto a skateboard and rolled them out. You need to support the back of the engine too but a prop will do that.

You don't need an actual crane, but a strong beam running through from side to side and some arrangement of hoist or pulleys to drop/lift would be fine.

Like mos jobs, the cost of repairing any damage caused by dropping said box will equal the cost of buying a crane and if you intend to keep the landy you will need it again in future. I borrowed one from a friend and when he needed it back I was lost. You will discover they are very useful.

Also remember once you've got the gearbox off, you'll likely want to put it or another back on - that is where having the crane is the most help. Aligning the input into the clutch and getting it to go onto the studs without wrecking them would be very difficult without a crane. Unless of course there's a few of you - but even then without all the bodywork off it's going to be tricky as there won't be much room for more people.
