Hi Guys,

As I said in my introduction thread I just bought a lovely 110 TD5 (ex-utility comp.). It needs a bit of work doing on it and since I'm still building up my knowledge and tool kit I thought that I should get any pressing stuff done at a local dealer (and ask them to tell me about anything upcoming so I can learn to do it myself). Especially since I'd like to drive it to Dorset next week...

The question is: Does anybody know a decent garage around Oxford itself that isn't too expensive? I've heard good things about James French but they seem like they could charge a premium for being as good as they are...

Thanks! :5bhurray:

same as mine -ex utility! beware the lack of waxoil on the chassis!

m8 find your nearest barracks, then find the local pub the VM's drink at -£800 dealer service for 100 squid. laughing.

where in dorset you taking her?!

If all goes well - taking her down to Weymouth then sort of way. Probably stay out of Weymouth though and hang around Osmington a well kept secret - Ringstead Bay :)

I might even take a jaunt over Salisbury as it's on the way, if I can get the diff sorted out that is...

whats up with the diff m8?

any phots of your new pride + joy btw?

wow just googled it + looks a beautifull place -have driven past there for 10 years + never knew it existed, thanx!!

Photos are on their way. Just a bit tied down at work atm :) I think the diff is just jammed from not being used. It doesn't seem to select high-or-low very well and won't lock at all. If I roll the car a little it makes it easier to get into high/low but I daren't try the same to get into diff lock in case I wind it up and it goes bang!

I have just been recommended this place: Oxfordshire Land Rover/4x4 Servicing & Off Road Accessories

Will probably be my first port of call.

Ringstead is a pretty cool place. You have to pay to park (it's only a couple of quid) but don't let that put you off. It's well worth it, especially if you have kids or the like.

thanks for the steer m8, will take a detour next time im down that way!

beware the cost of labour m8, have a look at busters photo landrover repairs section + invest in a haynes -nothing is too hard to DIY on a landy just depends on how much time you got ;p

at £20/litre on ATF +min £30/hour labour - i learnt fast + invested the cash i saved in a decent socket set.

+ with an ex utility wagon, keep an eye out for a banshee squeel when putting it in gear. Our wagons have had a hard life + Td5's have a crap oem clutch setup -a common issue on the TD5 im afraid, the release bearing loosens (cant just change the bearing, new clutch complete £600+) but more so due to the nature of ex utility veh's.
(actually the duel mass flywheel is a triumph of engineering in its own right, just a shame its anarea of inherant fail too often in the Td5!)

I fully intend to do as much as I physically can. My concern is that she hasn't been looked after too well for the past couple of years and I might miss something critical. The plan is to ask the garage to only fix what can't wait and supply me with the parts to do the rest...or that's how I hope it would go...

do you have any mates close to you that can give her the once over?
just thinking that if you went to my garage + said that;

a) id find every little thing possible + try to sell you the parts -when prob not needed

b)huge combat indicator that you wouldnt know if id done the work or not.

your right to be concerned about your diff but i thought wind up only occurred when too much turning the wheels, however, again if you went to a garage with the above outlook, they'd keep it a week for maybe an hours work......

other than that its fluids, filters, grease gun round he nipples + pads/discs which is maybe a fri afternoons work depending how many brews the mrs brings ya ;)

I live in the Oxfordshire area and I use Mark Smith (Land Rover in Bicester) they don't advertise as they have soooo much business... they are a little pricey but they really helped me as much as possible. You can buy anything you want and take it to them and they will fit it... They gave mine the once over and advised me well... plus they wont force you into doing anything you don't want. Plus they have a guy that is just the nuts when it comes to doing the wiring.. If you want there number let me know.

Cheers
Jase

nice 1 jase, highly recommended then.
just speaking from personal experiences down here -when i walk into a garage people dont realise i might have only owned 1 for less than a year but iv been working on wagons for 8years+ they just try to ride a cash cow. lol (my baby face?)
e.g. the clutch issue -one guy tried to charge me 1300 to drop the engine till i pointed out there was no need!?

i'll take the number too if ya can post/pm it me, theyr only an hour from my old haunts!

though it may be worth looking into the tri forces engineering school at bicester -theres bound to be ex mob civvi's there doing jobs on the side, as i say earlier; cheap cheap cheap!

Thanks Jase - Pricey isn't an option right now but if you could pm me their number I will keep them in mind for later.

I think I'll take the hit and go to Dorset in the bimmer and take my time and be meticulous with the Landy. When I'm sure she won't impale herself on her own prop I'll take her out for a proper run :)
