My Series III has a 3.5 V8 engine twin carbs. It has always started spot on however resently it will start when cold but not after a short journey(10mins). Eventually it started when I sprayed EasyStart into the air intake. This is the first car I have ever worked on so please bare with me. I have changed the spark plugs the old ones had lots of carbon deposits on them is this usual? Any other ideas?

Cheers Paul

Try changing the CTS (coolant Temp Sensor) cheap and easy to do and could be all that's wrong.

Coolant Temp Sensor? On carburetted car? Almost like changing the distributor cap on a diesel.:D;)

Change the dissy cap and rotor. You might also change the leads (if not changed within a few years) and coil. Bad coil might give such symptoms. And check, and adjust/change your points.

Thanks for your help as I said Im new to this. Do I take from above comment that I dont have a CTS as its Carburetted. Where do I find the coil is it attached to the distribution cap? The distribution cap and leads were changed by previous owner early last year

Hi. my carbed v8 90 did the same. i striped the carbs and reset the timing. it was a little better. but the main cause was fuel evaporation. mainly due to the heat in the engine bay.

Are you running a mechanical lift pump as fitted to early range rover v8's or a electric pump. i original mounted the fuel pump in the engine bay and that caused me no end of starting problems. turns out the pump needed to be at fuel tank level. so once moved it was sorted.

Also you could have a bad. coil and when hot its failing.

Bryan

I believe its an electric pump as it has a seperate switch in the cabin which can be on and the fuel pump can be heard with the ingnition off. Have got a new coil coming so will try that first.
