won't go into low range.

I was cleaning the crud out of the gearstick, and the big ball that it rotates on today, and while I was doing it noticed that the high/low ratio lever only seems to have two positions (high range, and neutral) the engine is not running

the gearbox has no oil currently as the rear seal just went, so im wondering if this is a major to fix, or will some fresh oil and a bit of a drive get it going again?

Try it when engine is running. I can engage low range only sometimes stationary with engine off. Doesnt help to let go of the clutch and try again with no rotation whatsoever...

great, that's what I wanted to hear. because it means my transfer box is probably fine ;)
:D

If it still doesn't go in with the engine running, sometimes the bracket with the hole on the front of the high/low shaft (where the ball thing on the gear lever is) needs a bit of a rotation.

hmm well a little update (can't run the engine right now as its out of fuel)

the yellow knob (high range 4x4 selector) seems to be stuck down (so its in 4x4)

when I try and pull the red knob backwards to make it pop up, it goes into neutral and then stops.

on other landy's I have seen it usually just slides back and the yellow knob pops up quite easily (with the occasional refusal lol)

Yellow know will only pop up again when you manage to get it into low range.

There is no other way to get it out of 4 wheel drive: the yellow knob has a pin on the end, which locates in a hole on a shaft. The two only line up when you have the transfer box in LOW.

Have you got the tunnel cover off? The yellow knob has a spring on it which lifts it up and disengages fwd. Try moving the red lever back and forth while pulling the yellow knob up.

yea the tunnel cover is off, I did try pulling up while moving the red lever back.
no joy
:croc:

erm, how about trying to engage low first? The spring doesn't seem to be the problem.
Tobi is right, you have to engage low first, so get some petrol and fire her up for a sec. You might have to let the clutch go when in neutral, maybe it just stopped unfavorably.
Try easiest first, start the engine...
