Wobbling Front Left Wheel

Half a mile from home my front left wheel started to wobbler quite badly for about ten seconds then stopped.
I drove home and it didn't do it again.
There seems to be a certain about of play in the steering wheel before the wheels turn as well now.
I'll get it to a garage tomorrow ( I think kwik fit is the only one open ).
I'd love to have a go at fixing it myself but I don't have a garage and my house is smaller than a U-Boat so don't have any tools ( and don't know what I'm doing ).
Could it be a worn track rod end ball joint?
Anybody any ideas.

It would happen when there's so much fun to be had in the snow round Huddersfield at the moment.
 
Could this be the problem ? Seriously you'll get a better response if you let people know which vehicle it is

So sorry chaps, gone a bit blonde with the flu at the moment.

Its a twenty three year old defender soft top with a 200 TDI engine and a discovery rear axle and gearbox.
Also has a broke heater, hence the flu.

I'll give it a go tomorrow or Monday if I can't get a new drive shaft gasket.
Gonna have to find some where to put a new tool kit.
 
if you think quick fit is a garage then gawd help you
after you've bin sold a new exhaust an set of tyres you don't need
and if the wheel bearings check out ok
then swivel pins is what i'd check next
 
Are yo sure it's the front left wheel? How do you know? If you mean you got a vibration through the steering and assumed it was the front left then it's possible it isn't .. ;)

First thing I'd check is tyre pressures and balance, then that wheel nuts are properly tight, or even there! (BTDTGTTS) Then onto wheel bearings, swivels etc. Jack the wheel up and see if it actually wobbles, then try the other front and both rears. Then I'd check all steering bushes and suspension bushes, see how far the linkages move out of their normal range of movement.
 
Checked all nuts and there tight and there.
I'll see if I can jack it up tomorrow at work and see if anythings loose.
This is my first Defender and only had it a month so not sure what I'm looking for.
I don't live far from Rocar Moores Landrover garage in Huddersfield so may take it to them.
Has any body had any dealings with their service department?
I know I will walk away with my pants down but as long as the work is A1 I'll have to take it on the chin.
I work long hours and time off is a big no no so I'm limited to my options and just want it safe.
At least with all the help from you chaps I have a better idea of what it could be.

Jacked it up yesterday and saw what the problem was, On the front axle facing the front at the left just behind the roll bar there is a nut facing you.
This had corroded and the wasn't held in.
Took it to my friend who has welded a new plate on the front and back and its perfect again now.
