wobble

hi I last posted here twelve months ago about a wobble that was not wheel wobble and after a new viscose joint new drive shafts four wheel alignment and new tyres with wheels balanced the problem still remains though not as bad,so today I took off the prop shaft and the wobble has gone worse though now its at speeds of about fifty to seventy mph any more ideas,thanks.Kieron

What do you mean by wobble? Do you mean vibration?

Hi jedi , its somewhere between the two ,its a bit more than wheel wobble ,hence the term wobble ,but its not quite A hippo made from jelly!.(just love that description) Kieron

Not sure if this will help, but my Freelander 1 suffered a similar problem a couple of years ago. I found that it was down to having put cheap tyres on. I am now back with michelin tyres And the wobble has never returned.

Hi I took the freelander out again today and found that if I slowly take the speed up to around 70 then it hardly shakes at all but if I push it up, it wobbles like mad.Kieron

I have just driven it for about 80 miles down to north wales and it runs ok until I put any load on i,e try to up the speed to quick,then quite a big wobble.any more ideas,thanks.Kieron

Tyres would seem a good bet, all inflated evenly? Check carefully I have seen dud tyres - even from reputable brands/sellers. No unpleasant lumps or bulges?

Unlikely but no rim damage is there? My son's car suffered front suspension damage and it knocked / wobbled only when turning left under power. Damage rim and bent suspension component!

Is the wobble more pronounced one side to other, or front / rear? Rear sub-frame attached securely?

Yeah tyres can go out of round. And also twist. Try jacking the car up and rotating the wheels in turn. Watch for any lumps or bumps etc.

Is this wobble from the engine? wheels? does your steering wheel wobble?

Maybe your new viscous coupling is un balanced? did you take the whole prop off or just part of it?

are you driving too close to the kerb?

freelanders get scared if they see anything remotely offroad

moving on again,on my return from north wales a clunking sound has developed as I either throttle up or take my foot off the throttle .it is very reminiscent of the old mini engine stabiliser bar bushes gone when the engine used to rock back and forth when the rubber bush was worn is there any similar bush on the freelander,thanks.Kieron

Quick question, have you had any problems with the battery recently? Is it auto or manual?

Off it still does it without the prop I would start looking at the inner joints on the drive shafts. Sounds like it's a FL1 TD4? I have had a similar issue that unlike tyre wobble was not present at a constant speed but there during acceleration/deceleration. Only way I fixed this was with a genuine drive shaft as the aftermarket ones all exhibited the problem

thanks for the help,i am leaning towards the drive shafts they have been replaced but they where not genuine shafts, I am sure I have read somewhere on the forum the makers of the good ones so I will endeavour to read the posts again to get the information thanks all very much.Kieron

This sounds familiar this wobble thing. Turns out to be the NSF inner drive shaft joint. The grease had completely perished and the joint wore out. So much so that when the shaft was pulled out one of the three bearing just fell off.

To be honest only GKN / LR have proved any good for me.
