hi has anyone had the same problem that my 04 freelander has suffered, a few days ago i started the motor as normal, put window wipers on to clear screen and then put car into reverse, a few mins later the car was full of smoke from o/s boot panel, removed panel and found that a load of wires that lead into the tail gate had burned away so now not got any rear window wiper and tail gate wont open . has anyone heard of similler problems

Its the stoopid gimmick of auto wipe when reverse selected, un yer rear wipers are frozen to the glass= burn out weakest part. . . .stoopid Lr engineers :( :( :( mind you same can happen to the front ones,,,,,,,

had 4 diferent customers in 2day wi blown fuses in the wiper circuit, all cuz of frozen wiper blades!

Now, as an elctronics engineer I seemed to remember that there was a device to protect the wire loom from over current damage. Oh yes, its called a fuse. Worked a treat in this case it seems.

On a serious note it is worth locating the rear wiper fuse and checking it is of the correct value (whats left of it). It does sound like its been up rated in the past. Bit late I know but at least we will know why this happened.

Sh! - giving away trade secrets - it aint a fooz - its a "current limiting, non resettable switch" - speshully if yu just had a call-out to change one.;)

When I had my gaylanders, and having read the owners manual so that I knew how they worked, I always used to free-up my rear wiper on frosty mornings so as to avoid that problem.
But then, I'm such a boring old git......

fuse has not blown it is the correct one 10 amp, and wiper was not frozen or stuck to rear window, might be a faulty conector as all the wires leading into it have burnt away,

It therefore sounds like you had a point of high resistance and the connector would indeed be your most likely candidate. It sounds like you've got a bit of loom rebuilding on this weekend. Good luck.
