Wiper motor speed upgrade

Has anyone any info on the wiper drive cog upgrade from 115 degree to 140 degree? I would seem to be a good upgrade but has anyone done it on a standard wiper motor on a Defender 90? I have a 2001 TD5 and am thinking of swapping mine and have seen a Youtube video that shows a similar change and it seems a good idea. The gear cog/drive simply replaces the standard one and at about £25 seems a good upgrade to do.
I am about to renew the old wiper motor anyway as i now only have intermittent and slow speed wipe not fast at all. So buying this upgrade would seem a good time to do it.
Any ideas anyone or anyt experience of doing it and does it work OK.

What is it you are expecting from this change from 115 degree to 140 degree gear?

I was hoping to get a much wider sweep of the screen than the 115 degree version gives me. The newer Defenders have this as standard and the annoying non swept part of the windscreen will exist no more. On Youtube there is a man from Britannic Restorations who does the modification to the original cog inside the wiper motor and it seems to work OK. Thats why i ask if anyone has used this 140 degree cog in theirs.

You could try it. Keep your old cog in case you want to swap back, could be an interesting mod.

although my rack is so worn that sometimes my wipers wipe off the screen at the edges

If your wipers go onto the screen rubber then i would say you need to move them on the wiper spindles one groove so they dont.

Flat's are like mine, so much wear they just flop off the edge of the screen when wet. No point in moving on spindle's they will just flop more at the end into the screen gutter.

I have a standard TD5 setup with everything genuine parts. I get a full sweep with no missing sections, if I fitted a 140degree gear it would over sweep the screen.

nope. Sometimes they do it, sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they park and sometimes they don’t, and sometimes they sweep down into the gutter. I am waiting until they properly fail then I will replace it all in one go. It will just be worn wheel boxes

If you were to order a new wiper motor it will not have the gear with it, the gear is a separate order part at this point you will choose 115 or 140. I still believe the 140 will give a sweep to wide.

I found a thread on another forum where to remove slack from the wipers you can rotate the splines by 180 degrees (unworn side). I've not tried it yet but it looks like a quick thing to try.

See this on the web and then go look at a Britannica Restoration Ltd video on Youtube to see a man make his own version with a welder and an old 115 degree cog from a wiper motor. It gives a full screen sweep and no gaps like the 115 degree original version does.
