P38A Windscreen wipers

1996 4,6 Gems Auto
Broke down last week and had to be recovered due to alternator dying.
Now had new alternator fitted and she goes fine.
BUT
When I spray windscreen washer the wipers work and then return to park position.
They used to wipe a few times before they stopped but now they return to park when the button is released.
All the other wiper speeds work ok. Anyone know what can cause this?

Washer level low perhaps.

Yes it is low as a clip broke.
Could that cause it?

Extract from the owners manual page 77:
NOTE: If the wiper system senses a low fluid
level in the washer reservoir, then the
programmed wash/wipe will only operate for
as long as the button is pressed, i.e. there will
be no timed wash and no additional 3 wipes.
