Well, driving home in the heavy snow and one of my wipers stopped wiping 
got home and took the top dash off revealed this to be the problem.
Thankfully a pushrod is a similar enough diameter to push in with a weld on the back for good luck. The engine is a 200tdi so I think it will function fine with just the 7 push rods left
Back in the vehicle and it works a charm, although when I started the engine it went clunk and locked up... probably unrelated.
