Having an issue with my windscreen heater. Sometimes it will work (mainly when the weather is 25+) but when it is cold the heater wont come on. I can press the button on the dash but the light on the button doesn't come on. Sometimes it will but more often it wont work at all. Do I have to do something else to make this come on or is it not working at all.
What can I do to find the issue or fix it. Baffles me that every now and again it will work when I need it.

Windscreen heater ? in a Defender ? Probably a prank ... a cruel joke played by the previous owner.
It would need a good amount of power and to light the light and warm the element you'd need a hefty supply and a good earth.
There is likely to be a relay somwhere, behind the clocks would be a good place as there is a major feed and aux power off the back of the ignition.

No, definitley got one. Its an 07 xs Puma. The option is there, just having an issue with intermittent working. Will double check all the relays and fuses this weekend to see if I can see one mapped out for it :)

Heated windscreen was standard in the TD5 XS as well.
l fitted a heated screen to my 110 SW, it was the best thing l did to the vehicle. lt does take a fair bit of current but there's a couple of relays in the system, one to switch the main feed to the screen and a timer to turn it off after about 10 minutes.

lf yours is intermittent, l would suspect that there's a poor connection in the high current wiring.
Check the connections at the lower corners of the screen.

You could also have a look at the relays, not sure where they are in the tdci though.

There is I believe a timer unit controlling the front screen under the drivers seat C1624 worth checking

Thank you for your reply on this, I did check these relays and just unplugging and plugging them back in seems to have this working again. I have not had chance to take the car out for a drive as fixing something else  but if this stops working again what would you suggest looking at? I did check the relays also out of the car and they are fine.

Well, if pulling the relays out and putting them back in cured the fault, l would be looking at the connections that the relays fit into.
l've had burnt out connections before.
