Can you tint onto ready tinted windows?

My rear windows (not back door) are already tinted (maybe 50%), i want to make them darker.

Would I need to remove the old tint 1st and put in a darker tint, or could i just put another 50% tint over the top of the old tint?

Depends if it is factory tinted glass or a film on top. If its a film then remove and start again, if its factory tinted I would get a couple samples. If you put 50% tint on 50% tint its effectively 100% tint...

it's defo a film, you can see the air bubbles around the writing in the corner (they're very small, and without a detailed inspection you would not notice them).

Is it hard to remove window tint film?
 
Not hard, just long. Just be confident you can reapply it, I have tried 3 - 4 times and next time I'll have a pro do it.

Make sure you properly clean and dry the glass before you fit the new film.

I've been told to clean the window with a razor / stanley blade

I want to tint the back windows so people can't see all my kit in the car .. also I want the extra protection on the rear side windows. A stone hit my drivers window the other day and shattered it all over me, I don't want the same thing to happen again, especially on the kids

also, stopping the UV rays entering the car would be good and to shelter the dog from the sun
 
Privacy, security on two levels - Stops people seeing in, stops glass from being broken so easily, aesthetics, heat reduction, take your pick

Can do just be careful not to scratch the glass in doing so.
 
There is a limit to how much tint you can put on the front door Windows. I think it's a 30% tint max. As in 100% of light hits the window and 70% can pass through.
 
70% of light must pass through any front windows, rear windows is anything you like.

I thought of doing a 15% tint maybe 20% tint on the front side windows so my arms dont burn when in traffic and sunlight! Windscreen is already slightly tinted from factory by LR.

The Regulation states 70% of visible light must pass through the driver's side windows (75% through the windscreen) including any other substrate fitted to the glass. Many people misunderstand the regulation and presume that 70% allows a 30% tint - It doesn't! Glass does not let in 100% of light. Clear glass only allows approximately 86% of light to pass & the slight tint of standard manufactured glass varies from the 70% maximum limit up to approx 80% of light passing through, thus any film being applied to these windows will drop the light transmissions to below the regulation limit.

If your front windows are tinted to any level you do risk being stopped by either Traffic Police or VOSA (Vehicle & Operator Services Agency) they have light meters to test the light that passes through your glass. If you have a subtle tint fitted then you should just be asked for it to be removed, if you have dark front door windows you could be told you can't drive your car any further and face a fine and points on your licence!

I had my rear windows done for the same reasons you have. The company doing it made it clear that they wouldn't under any circumstances put any tint on the front windows (not that I was wanting them done anyway) but would put a clear security film on if asked which makes it harder for thieves to smash the window.
