Winch wiring

Had an electric winch fitted to my TD5 but the the garage tell me they wired it to my alternator ( did I hear him right)...Is this right?....I may well be being stupid here as I am as much use with car electrics as mud flaps on a tortoise

what? never heard of that one before, I have mine on the battery. Its easy to install and easy to remove.

well basically the leads did not reach!...the winch does work OK...

well, i extended mine, I have heard people powering it through the head lights, I’m not winch expert, but that’s the way I have done mine, it works when the engine is switched off

electrically the output from the alt and the pos on the battery are the same point. so it don't really make much difference it just seems a bit daft and its not good practice. it would make more sense to extend the leads and that way if you have a problem the cables will be easier to get to.. if i was you i would also check to ensure they have put a fuse in the circuit. other wise when it goes wrong so will yer alt.
