Winch Control Switches

Just wondering what folks thoughts are on what switches i need for front winch.

I was thinking 3 switches. Power on/off, winch-in, winch-out. Anything else i should consider?

id have 1 - momentary in / momentary out and a proper isolator located in the seatbox.

I will have a look to see how to wire up an isolator switch for it. How about freespool?

Having separate switches to winch in and out is a VERY bad idea, do not do it. You don't need any wiring for freespool unless you have air activated freespool, do you?

Ok on your advice i will use mom-off-mom for in and out control. I will be using a warn winch, so i take it the winch will freespool when no power going to it?

While im at could someone point me in the direction of a diagram taking twin batteries and isolation switch into consideration. Some people say do it this way, and others say no do it this way...

I have a mains isolator by the battery then in cab i have an isolator that isolates a three way mom-off-mom for direction of winch which connects to the winch via standard wander lead plug, that way i can be sure that if im outside faffing with the winch and i unplug the in cab switches nobody can take my fingers off (or worse) it also means i can plug in a standard controller outside for the times when you want absolute control outside of the vehicle. As for freespool sadly i have to get out and flick the handle round 90 degrees.

Winch will freespool when you turn the freespool lever that is on the winch gearbox. Just because you are not winching does not mean it automatically goes into freespool.

Cba to find a diagram, but don't fit a split charge. Waste of time

Winch wiring diagrams

Theres dozens on there that will cover pretty much any situation.

However:-

Seriously, if you dont understand how to modify the diagram you posted, should you be wiring up the winch yourself? There is a significant amount of amps involved here which could injure you / damage your vehicle (by causing a fire etc)

If i could afford to have someone do it, i would. I cant afford it so i come on here for advice

Mechanically im good. Electrically, not so much lol

Well there is alot more to it than just a diagram. Such as the ratings of switches, relays the cross sectional area of the wire used at various points, connectors

eerr ..
just dont fit it to the ignition switch?

electrickery is like plumbing.... sort of... so you still need the electricity to gets to its destination. If you dont want to run it through the ignition in order for it to work only when the ignition is on, then simply do not do so. However you could then leave the solenoid energised which would drain your battery.

Your choice.

When the winch is nether going in or out, it is braked automatically to stop the drum freespooling un controllably

Nope both charged equally off of the same alt. And all systems run off both simultaneously

Full comp motor so no need for seperare circuits
