Good evening.

I have the chance of buying an full L reg (the one with the wee square headlights) diesel Discovery that is an MOT failure. :)

What parts could I easily use on my petrol Series III?

I'm thinking of using the engine and may be the gear box, but I don't know which it is, i.e. 200tdi or 300tdi. I do know it's manual however.

The theory being that I can run it on two tanks, one diesel and the other veg oil. (I currently enjoy free motoring in my 1992 Merc which has been converted).

What engine is likely to be in the Disco and will it fit?

Cheers

200TDI
Gearbox not really worth the hassel but the engine is brilliant, How much is the disco?

If you do buy it there are plenty of how-to's on the subject and it really is worth it ;)

Oh ****e - Oh my God! Who threw that fecking big spanner right in the middle there?!! :(

I know it was my pal, who went to have a drive by the Disco the other day. Well was he to know that there are two old Discos in the same locality?

The L plate one is NOT the one we're getting apparently. As I found out when I went to have a look I found the correct Disco, an "R" reg red Commecial in reasonable/poor-ish condition. :D

So, guys my question is this: is that gonna be a 300tdi and if so will that fit?

Now, without going on for pages, as I don't want to trouble any of you too much :blabla:, but what is involved, for instance does it need rewiring, a new fuel tank, changes to the gear box, drilling, welding, radiator change and so on.

I only want to do this, so I can run it CHEAPLY, and I actually feel quite guilty at changing the car so much from it's original state.

Any more information you may have will be gratefully accepted.

200 TDI int a Series
My offered opinion on the TDi into a series conversion is that theres no such thing as a 'cheap fix'.
Stuff a TDi into a series and the way that particular engine makes its power, the blower spooling up and bringing the torque with a big bang at 2Krpm is like hiting your main shaft with a sledge hammer every time you touch the throttle..... they KILL series transmissions in double time.
And if you do it on the cheap, then you are going to have a box that is old and worn and going to be killed even quicker.... then theres the performance of an engine with near twice the power, and the fact that that would demand suspension that can soak up bumps at higher velocities, chassis mounts able to withstand those forces, and steering and brakes that will keep yopu on the straight and narrow and not see you taking any 'unplanned' off-road excursions.....
Bringing a series up to scratch to handle that kind of power, you are looking at seriouse money NOT doing it on the cheap.
Has been done, and will be done... and people will call me a luddite for it, but sorry... dont see much point in 'buying' trouble for myself. If I'm going to the effort of an engien conversion I dont want to have to re-do the job six months down the line to get at the smashed gearbox or anything else!
Option that does present itself to you is using the LT77 gear-box, but using that with the LT230 X-fer on the end brings a lot of work and hassles, departing from the 'cheap and easy', unless you use an Ascroft adapter on the LT to fit the series X-fer..... still a a lot of owrk, and a £200 plate to buy.
The 200 Di 'un-turbod' TDi idea has been done and is reccomended, but reports confirm that its NOT much better than a 2.5NAD without the blower... just newer and easier to get hold of.
Possibility though....
BUT if its a 300 TDi there IS some difference that maeans its NOt a straight bolt onto the series bell-housing as a 200TDi.... everything else is apaprently near identical apart from EGR kit or something, so I dont know.... maybe its just a hole that needs drilling or something.
Either way.... I'd not be in a hurry to chuck one at a series, without a lot of thought.
LPG on a petrol motor works out as cheap as diesel anyway, (not bio tho) and is a 'removeable' accessory that doesn't detract too much from originality.
May be worth a thunk.
Else..... MAY bve worth investigating the Di conversion; link to its exponents web-site in the thread on the 'opposition' site.
