Disco 1 Wierd Steering

Hello All,

This is an odd one.

First of all my 300tdi drives perfectly straight and does not wobble one bit (I know right, even that's odd)

But

In order for me to drive straight I have to hold the steering wheel in a two o'clock position to what it was. If I turn hard left there is some bumping as if like the tyre or steering stops were catching, and if I loosen my grip or turn the ignition off when in hard left, it throws the steering a few inches to the right quite forcefully.

The most annoying thing is I cant see the fuel gauge until I turn right.

At first I thought it is one of those things, but I am now having concerns especially after I felt the bumping the other day for the first time. Thankfully I don't use my Discovery as my main car anymore.

Was wondering what would be the first sort of things to check and where.

Hi 1997 Discovery,

Have you checked all the alignment,

Steering wheel, / steering box / front wheels?
Have you checked the steering locks bolts?

What caused this to change? was it sudden?

When the steering wheel is at that 2 o'clock the wheels are perfectly aligned, course when I straighten the steering wheel they point right quite a bit.

Not checked anything yet as not sure where to start.

I noticed it after a pot hole on a twisty country road, but didn't really notice it until a dual carriageway as then it became apparent that something wasn't right.

Well, if it was straight before and now it is not after hitting a pot hole.
then you need to start looking to see what has changed / been damaged / moved/ come loose?

Surely you mean, if you straighten the steering wheel the wheels point left, not right. Sounds like that pothole has bent something, a degree or two out of alignment is one thing but your talking about 50 degrees (at the steering wheel). What with the new knocking noise, I would be disinclined to drive it anywhere until it has been properly inspected.

Surly it can have only slipped on the S/B shaft or the 1 from box to S/W ????

Something that major should be noticable by a visual inspection by laying underneath. I'd advise sorting it asap as steering is quite important!!
