Why would my CKP earth insulation be stripped back?

Hi all,

I'm still trying to resolve some starting issues on my 2001 Defender TD5.

I'm currently under the drivers seat, checking connections there. I noticed that one of the cables going into the red side of the ECU has had the insulation stripped back. I've had a quick look on RAVE and it says it's the CKP sensor screened earth. I've checked the other two wires from that bunch and they go to CKP sensor negative and CKP sensor positive.

Why would it be stripped back? I'm assuming it's to test something, but what? And is that likely to suggest the previous owner(s) have had starting issues at some point...?

It's why i bought an older one, never had any starting issues, have not even had a glow plug failure. Good luck, it will most likely be some form of electrical mishap somewhere in the system, a circuit gone wrong or something. Hope you get it fixed

People seem to like tampering with TD5 wiring. Often to no useful purpose. There was all sorts of grotesque bodging on mine Yes, I suppose someone was looking for a signal. You'll be able to see it on screen when your Nanocom comes. If you turn the engine over on the starter you will be able to see the engine revs and the cylinder balance values so you'll know it's working.

Did you get an answer to this? I have seen at least two TD5's with this wire stripped back, it would be good to know why.

Nope. I can only imagine it was to clip something on and measure something?!?!

possibly someone had an immobiliser fitted on that circuit to interupt the crank sinal and stop it from starting

johnlad, would fitting an immobiliser into this circuit require the wire to be cut through and some method of re-connecting it (like a switch) as required when not immobilising the vehicle.
The reason I ask is because what I have seen aprox 20mm of the outer insulation only has been removed the conductor is still intact.
