I was on here two years ago with my last P38 Rangie and I must say thank you to this site for preserving my sanity and a plethora of help, friendly advice and tips galore. However the pain and suffering that goes both mentally and financially with a P38 took it's toll, and in a fit of disgust I sold it. The problem is, it got under my skin in a way that almost makes me sympathise with Heroin addicts. The current (DIY) renovation of my house and planned projects led me to the decision I needed another four wheel drive. (Especially when 16 packs of tiles, a bag of grout and two big tubs of tile adhesive decimated the rear suspension on my BMW) So of I went with the intention of buying a 4wd that was anything other than a Rangie, and having sat in or driven virtually everything else I came to the conclusion there was no other machine that came close.

So I've bought one.
A cheap one.
One that has been sat in a garden for three years.
Bought it without hearing it run.
Bought one that the remote fob doesn't work and can only be started with EKA
However it does run, it runs very well in fact.
It passed it's MOT first time.
It's an autobiography
It's that funky turquoise colour I don't know the name of.
It wanders all over the road in a way only a range rover with a misaligned steering box can.
It has the book picture resplendent on the HEVAC display.
The heater matrix O rings are not leaking.
The front diff (Or something more sinister) is making one hell of a racket.
It's full of mud, dirt, cobwebs and mould.
The air suspension works perfectly and quickly.
Everything works apart from the remote. (Flashes but won't resync, will be checking the receiver at weekend)
I love it in some sort of masochistic way.

So here I am again looking at a big green box outside the house. :behindsofa:

welcome :D

i'm a man I don't understand what your on about above ?

And the fun has started. :) Managed to find 5 minutes today to look at one or two bits. Well my growling/whining/grumbling noise isn't to my suprise the other half, it is seems the front diff pinion bearings are shot at, the drive flange wags around in a way that suggests the newness has worn off. The front prop is also worn at the front UJ, though that seems to be because it looks like it has never seen a grease gun. There was no sign of axle wind up when I put it on the ramp and the VCU is not seized which is a glimmer of hope in the land of despair. The steering box is a quarter of a turn out, however despite oxy acetylene the adjuster on the drag link is being a little on the stubborn side so a new drag link required, and whilst i'm at it and halfway there, a new steering damper. The tracking is a bus ride out as well so I'll do a full geo check when I can get it on our geo ramp. Other than that the only other mechanical problem is a titter on the exhaust manifold. Improved by tightening it up though I think I may need to break the bank with a new set of gaskets. Other than that it's in pretty good shape. Oh, the transfer box is leaking from the rear prop output shaft as well, so will do that. So looks like most of the work it needs is cosmetic, for now. :D

Hi Dan
did you get a chance to look at the receiver, i have a nanocom evo 2 i could plug in for you if you need it as it has the P38 software, maybe re sinc the fob to the car. just a thought ;)

The reciever has power and ground to it, but scoping the output shows no output at all, remote pressed or not so it looks like I need a reciever to start with. Now I've been looking at these nanocom widgets. Will they unlock the BECM and turn the immobilisation off? In all honesty I'm going to order it a new key anyway as the one I have is dropping to bits and held together with tape.
