Hi all, went to the beach the other day and got temporarily stuck. I am new to 4X4 off road use so assume little knowledge on subject. Me and swmbo decide to get to a part of the beach that non 4X4 cannot get to. We had already climbed up and down steep hill ect no probs and was driving along the beach when the sand deepened by no more than about 6 inches and before I know it Moby Dick in a paddling pool syndrome and we were going nowwhere! I had been driving slowly in 2nd gear diff lock low, we eventually got out by letting air out of tyres and rolling backwards and forwards, saved a little face but not much.

I have checked the diff lock as advised elsewhere on forum by jacking one wheel and trying to turn ect, no problems the difflock engages/disengages ok.

Tyres are Michelin synchro 205/16/80 and in good condition.

Q1. What did I do wrong?

Q2. What can we do with the disco to make it more capable?

Q3. Any particular additional equipment we can (should) buy?

Q4. Great car but is there another vehicle a bit more capable?

The vehicle will be used for beaches and 'mild' off road excursions once or twice a week and sees town/motorway (90/10) use in general

TIA to all

regards
Dave

next time drive it in high ratio. get some wider tyres to disperse the weight and as stated, get yourself some waffle boards/sand ladders. a winch and ground anchor may also be of use to you...

...getting stuck in sand is almost inevitable. experience will previal.

Let all yeh tyres down to 1.4 KG (BEFORE BUT DONT DRIVE OVER
30MPH AT THOSE PRESSURES) and just keep momentum up,dont try and change gear if things get tough as you will just stop!!!

Thanks for the many replies ect. with regard to speed and momentum I was going quite slow 2nd in low because there were one or two other people there in there 4X4's and the last thing you want to do is run down a kiddy.

Some questions:

Would changing my 2 3rds worn 205s to perhaps 235' help?

Would I need to change my rims (standard alloys at present)?

Perhaps a device that locks the diff in the axle, would that help?

Best winch to fit?

As this is going to a regular thing to the beach is there (god forbid) a different vehicle that is more capable? i did not want to go any newer as the 200 is ideal for the type of work I do and anything more expensive is going to be wasted. I also particularly like the idea that in the middle of nowhere even without a battery or alternator the car can be started without worring about a load of electronics, something you cannot do on newer vehicles Land Rover or not.

It seems to be a lot of effort just to top up my tan in peace and quiet.

TIA to all

235/70 tyres will go on standerd rims no problem:) you can get special sand tyres tooooo!

You can get a centre diff lock but it will cost yeh!

Dont know what the laws are in Spain for going on a beach with a 4x4 but if you get caught in France you are in deep ****.

If you are that concerned about getting stuck or running kids over walking might be a better option as yeh not gunna get any thing better than a Landy!! Unless you ask on a Nissan forum :D

OK will prob go for a set of 235 tyres for starters, when you say centre diff lock I assume you mean in the axle case and not the one already fitted?

With regards to driving on beaches here in Spain there would be a revolution if authorities tried to stop it. The spanish coastline is magnificent, if you are daft enough to drive off a cliff then thats up to you, in fact to be honest unless you are REALLY careful you could drive of a cliff without seeing one sign about danger ect. Also the police ect assume some kind of commonsense (as opposed the the British authorities beliefs) on behalf of the beach users AND IT WORKS! Hence the slow driving near other beach users.

Anyway, thanks to all and will now start buying 'stuff', incidently my 93 200 passed the ITV (MOT) today but as the car is over 10 years old it has to be done every six months which is a PITA!

regards to all
Dave
