Hello folks. Thought It would be a good idea to sign up here. Im hoping you guys are willing to help me out with a little project.

The story is thus, I don't own a Landy myself (yet) but I have just agreed to wield a spanner at my partners dads new purchase. Its a 1996 Ex MOD Defender 110 300tdi that has had a hard life (I assume that is nothing new).

Now I am an experienced engineer and mechanic but am used to working on much less agricultural vehicles. That said I am actually looking forward to working with nuts and bolts instead of plastic clips and fiberglass.

I spent a day on it today and so far we've found that;

the fuse board is wired completely differently to the layout on the cover or the haynes wiring diagram.

the heaters don't work.

the cooling system is massively over efficient (73 degrees max on a hard run up a welsh mountain).

the engine is leaking oil from multiple locations.

the engine is leaking water from the distribution block.

the engine is leaking fuel from the injectors.

the water pump is screaming like a banshee.

the front axle is leaking a lot of oil from the nearside hub cap and around the top of the steering joint (sorry not sure of the technical term, its the large spherical object where the cv joint would be on a car).

All that...

and I still want one!

Got a load of bits on order to fix some of it. Not sure about curing some of the leaks, I know the joke about the whole marking its territory thing but this thing is leaking like a sieve. Will be asking about that in due course though.

I'll see about putting a photo up tomorrow.

Cheers

Chris

the heaters don't work. normal

the cooling system is massively over efficient (73 degrees max on a hard run up a welsh mountain). normal

the engine is leaking oil from multiple locations. normal

the engine is leaking water from the distribution block. distribution block?

the engine is leaking fuel from the injectors. most likely injector seals (like copper washers)

the water pump is screaming like a banshee. replace it its an easy job just don't get a britpart one

the front axle is leaking a lot of oil from the nearside hub cap and around the top of the steering joint (sorry not sure of the technical term, its the large spherical object where the cv joint would be on a car). most likely blocked breather look on top of the axle there will be a 4mm banjo bolt with a 4mm I/D hose coming off of it take it off and blow it through

All that...

and I still want one! landrovers are like crack once you have tried it you will be hooked

Good answers already, awesome thanks.
Any Ideas why ex MOD vehicles are wired differently?

Ok so its maybe not a water distribution block. Umm the casting bolted to the front of the cylinder head that the thermostat housing and water pump are bolted to. Its leaking between the casting and the head.

no idea MOD landrovers run some systems that are not found on civilian ones, like convoy lighting etc

most likely that the gasket between the thermostat housing and the block has failed would be worth replacing while you have the pump off

mod landys have more kit on them when in service and so may be wired up different to accomodate any kit it had on it.
also battlefield repairs and some are/were 24volt ffr.

Heater should work my ex-mod is scorching on the heater front!

As for the over efficient cooling, check the thermostat isn't stuck open or that the viscous fan is seized.

Other than that sounds great :-D and yeah the wiring is different, basically ivvy spec but with loads added on…… I may have a wiring diagram, message me in a few days and remind me, I will have to have a search on my hard drive
