Yes i've had both those symptoms on a defender and they came with pleanty of warning. also tractor PTO powered equipment that if pushed to the limit (with no sheer bolt protection)would spiral the pto shaft rather than the uj fail. It does look like the circlip, for whatever reason has come out and allowed the bearing cap to move allowing the uj to uncouple itself. The yolk on the prop has minimal damage and both bearing caps are still intact and sat in the yolk. Im keeping the parts to show our driveline specialist that we deal with, on his next visit to the quarry to get his opinion. Next question folks----will the airbag deploying imobilise the vehicle in any way or should it start up when a new gear selector switch is fitted? cheers phil

Cool was Curious , I have noticed the cheaper brand cup are almost a push fit

Hope you get it sorted I'm up for changing mine in the summer think they been on a while time for a change there only cheap . Get your self a propshaft tool Preferably a 3/8 drive one rather than 1/2 inch the half inch one needs an extension. Bar on it

If your doing them yourself ;)

The SRS has no effect on starting the car.:)

propshaft tool and new bolts on the way, would have been here today but snow put end to that! "Datatek" i guess if the car starts then all i will get is a srs warning light ? Will all the other srs items be active or dead untill the srs ecu is replaced? cheers phil..

Yes you will have the SRS light on. According to my info, all the other SRS systems will still be active but I wouldn't try testing them with a shunt:eek:

Hi all, car been back together a few days now , seems ok up to press, although still i'm very weary of the slightest vibration!. Next hurdle to cross is getting the srs/airbag warning light/message clear. If i fit a new controler and another seat or airbag will that clear the faults or does it need to get hooked up? Srs controlers are on ebay but i've no idea which one! I guess there are different ones for the later models with side airbags, does any one know without me dismantling the car?? cheers phil

It was a side airbag that went? If so and it was like mine they are pretty useless. You will need the correct ECU, I can get you the part number if you need it as I had to change mine.
I re stitched my seat and didn't bother with a new airbag, the one that went off was out of date in any case, they have a 10 year life.
I can supply you with a plug in that will fool the SRS ECU into thinking the side airbags are fitted.

Thanks datatek, that sounds like the best option. please let me know cost for plugin if you dont mind sending me one. My car is a dhse 2001, if you don't have part no to hand dont worry i will strip down the console to see! . With all this done will it take away the srs light and airbag message? or does somthing need resetting? many thanks phil.. (yes i agree side airbag is useless, about on par with a whoopee cushion)

There not that complicated ,once the prop is off you just need circlip pliers and a press or a good strong vice. I have done quite a few especially on dump trucks and loading shovels of which some tend to be bolt on units , but smaller vehicles and pto powerd machinery all tend to use the same kind of system.

With a replacement SRS ECU and the resistor block fitted to replace the airbag, you should have no SRS light on. If you do, it will need resetting with diagnostics. I disconnected the unexploded side airbag too as they are past their replacement date.
I'll get the part number of the SRS ECU for you tommorow.
PM me with an Email address an I will send you a photo of the SRS ECU.

Just got two new UJs, I can feel a slight vibration at about 70 mph - not taking any chances. Now just got to find time to replace them - damn work getting in the way of fun!
