Who's gone from a D1 to a Td5 110?

Thinking of selling my D1 on and going for a 110 Td5 County.
I have had a 90 in the past, but i had no family then, 2 kids later i need a 5 door with space for dogs, prams and bags.

I also do a lot of towing so wanted the Td5 for the power over a 300, and i want a defender over a disco because that's what i want.
 
I think 110's make very good family vehicles. Lots of space.

I guess it's worth checking your licence (age dependent) and how many seats the 110 has. If it's a 12 seater you'll probably need to be able to drive a mini bus. But a 10 seater should be ok.

The 110 should ride quite well due to the lwb. But NVH of a Defender is miles behind a Disco 1. So it'll be a step back in that regard. So long as you are ok with that.

The 110 will have plenty of space, but it will be noisier, and be less car like to drive. They don't go into many multi storey car parks easily. Don't think anyone with a 300tdi has complained about lack of power here. However a 300 will be older, with the consequences of buying an older vehicle, both good and bad. The Defender will always be a cooler vehicle though (in every way - don't expect heat in the winter).

The licence issue is a common misconception, according to the DVLA website one can drive a minibus with upto 16 seats on a standard car licence as long as it not for hire or reward.

Thanks chaps, ideally want a Td5 so i can have electric windows etc, it would only be used for a spot of laning, winter get about and a dog car for me, we have a D4 and a Mondeo ST at home which are the daily drivers.
 
Given your range of vehicles, go for it, either a 300 or TD5, just buy the best you can get for the money - and remember age is not always a guarantee of quality. Chassis quality and service history are what I'd be looking for.
 
Thank you, i have quite a good bit of knowledge when it comes to buying cars i feel, so will do the best i can, found a lovely Td5 on ebay but it's in Kent, i don't really want to drive that far
 
To get a TD5 in the kind of condition you want, you'll probably have to shop nationally rather than locally, especially if you want optional extras like electric windows. Compared to the price of a Land Rover in good condition, the cost of fuel or fares is a drop in the ocean. I helped a friend get himself a TD5 90 earlier in the summer, and because he wanted the XS optional extras and ABS we ended up going on some quite long trips. But it was worth it. There were some changes to the TD5 spec in around 2002, such that the engine had metal head dowels rather than plastic ones, there was a centre console on the dash, and round fog and reverse lights rather than square ones. Personally I'd go for one of the later models like this.

Yes, i'm thinking of getting a later one, something around 2004/2005 model. I don't really want to travel, having being into the car scene for the last 15 years i've spent hours travelling up & down the country looking at 'minters' only to get there and it's a rot box with a shagged engine.

I didn't know about the plastic/metal dowels. I assume they were superseded because the plastic ones where not durable enough?
 
Dunno about you but I would personally choose a D2 over a 110. I'm a Defender man through and through but I'm sure that a Disco is more practical overall.
 
I sold my van last year and bought a 2005 Defender 110 CSW.
I drive 2-300 miles per week in the Land Rover including the occasional motorway trip, and l love it.
The heater works well once up to temperature. And a remap made it better to drive.
However l'd agree with the above. Good Defenders are out there, but you might have to travel as they are few and far between.
I bought mine blind from a high end classic car dealer 200 miles away after looking locally for weeks with no luck.
Fortunately it was as described, although the deposit was refundable if l didn't think it was as described when it was delivered.

Some sellers are asking high prices as well, and there are a lot of spruced up ones around (it's fairly easy for dealers to make a tatty one look nice, on the outside at least, and a lot are doing it) so if you see a nice one at a good price, put down a holding deposit and get on the train

Yes, the earlier variants of the TD5 engine were prone to unreliable head gaskets, because the head was apt to move around slightly in relation to the block. It was supposed to be located by dowels which were too soft on the earlier versions - the later metal ones are better. It was a problem on the earlier so called 10p engines. The later 15p ones are supposed to not be so prone to it.

Later model TD5s in good condition that haven't been modified are still commanding high prices on Ebay and Autotrader, and are sometimes more expensive than the later TDCi Pumas, so they seem to be quite collectible, even at higher mileages. So if you keep it nice your depreciation will be close to zero. But if you want one locally you might be cutting your choices down quite a bit.
 
Thank you all for the replies, i have found the perfect one on Trader but its a bit out of my price range, 56 plate XS Utility which is what i wanted ideally.
 
Yeah l wanted a Utility really as it's better for road/company tax.
I wasn't bothered about whether it was an XS or County but l can see why people like the XS.
