Who has tweaked their fuel pump to produce better driving characteristics???

My girlfriend has just bought a '94 300tdi 140k, previous owner said the pump had been tweaked but I don't know whats been altered. Am I right in thinking that as long as its not smoking it should be ok?
By smoke I assume black smoke or black haze? Apparently it smokes a bit at full throttle so it sounds like I need to turn something back a bit.

With not knowing whats been altered would the best option be to turn everything up till it smokes then wind it back a bit? Only altering one thing at a time.
I have done a fair bit of searching round and found a few guides etc so got a rough idea what I should be altering.

Considering a boost guage and EGT, also plan to decat, remove egr and clean the intercooler out.

Thanks

Mine smokes under full load and full boost. Been like thatvfor a while now and not notcied any problems so I wouldn't worry.

If you are boththerd wind you smoke screw, diaphram and star wheelnin 1/4 of a turn

On the matter of where to connect a boost gauge. I looked at the inlet manifold a little harder, there it was. A M12 plug with 1.5mm thread pitch located at the rear of the manifold ready for me to connect to. Problem is solved.

Im certain that if you connect something to this (on a Disco anyway) the inlet wont fit as the pipe to the boost guage would hit the scuttle. Im certain on a Defender the engine sits forward enough to be able to use it...
My inlet is off at the moment so am looking into somewhere to connect a guage to, the inlet is the best place apparently as the readings inaccurate elsewhere.

On the 300 tdi (1995) the M12 connection at the rear of the air inlet manifold has stacks of room between mainfold and bulkhead.

Just drill a hole down the centre of the plug, cut off the threaded end of a brass barbed fitting and silver solder the two together. I fitted a 45 degree brass barbed fitting. Its the perfect spot.

I turned diaphram just under 90deg n cog a full turn.n no smoke at all massive performance boost is all gd on gauge.it take bit of playing around so do 1 at a time n fi d out where it smoke then turn it back a bit.

must get round to doing mine, I have steephills both from home and end of the day from work, cold engine, its a chug to get up em without thrashing it

My boost gauge is tapped in to the pressure pipe at the injection pump. Cheap hong kong gauge but it goes to 17psi on full boost.

On my inlet manifold I drilled and tapped a hole near no.4 cylinder end and used the fitting from the turbo that the wastegate pipe goes on to. I used a blank brakepipe fitting to plug the hole at the turbo. The wastegate is now fed from the inlet manifold....this makes sure I have full boost pressure at the far end of the inlet manifold before the waste gate kicks in.
