Morning All
Wonder if anyone can shed any light on a problem my daughters freelander 1 experienced at the weekend
Its a 2006 2.0 TD4 with M47 engine
The car was driving perfectly for over 70 mile then she noticed a noise from the middle of the engine bay that she described as like a small burst of machine gun fire that was coupled with a burst of white smoke from the exhaust
Then it was ok for the next two three mile then happened again but got progressively worse over the next few mile where she pulled over and got recovered home
Diagnostics showed nothing and no MIL
Be grateful for any pointers or possible causes that may have been experienced by other members of the forum
Many Thanks & Regards

Possibly an injector has failed. That could make an noise, coupled with white smoke.

Morning Nodge
Thanks for coming back
Could one of the injectors be failing intermittently as when the car came back started perfectly drove to the garage for diagnostics and back again no problem
It does short/medium journeys no problem but appears to struggle around the 70 to 80 mile range
Kind Regards

Possibly. I'd check other common M47 issues too though, so that's the rail sensor for corrosion, weak MAF signal, and low pressure pump delivery pressure.

Thats great information many thanks for the rapid responses
Will get the garage to look at these areas next week
Appreciate your assistance
Kind Regards

Afternoon Nodge
Both Maf & Fuel rail sensors/voltages have been checked and are within specifications
In regards to the LP pump it functions but having done further investigations it appears to be controlled by a relay in the passenger side engine fuse box
Is it possible that this could begin to fail under some load conditions causing the chattering/machine gun noise that was experienced and the intermittent power supply to the pump allowed low pressure creating the poor combustion leading to the white smoke
If so could you advise what controls the FP relay please
Kind Regards

The low pressure fuel pump relay is energized by the EDC.
It's R1 in the engine bay fuse box.

You could link the terminals 30 and 87 together with a length of 10 Amp wire. This will power the pump continuously, eliminating the relay and EDC supply completely.

Afternoon Nodge thanks for coming back so quickly
Is it possible that the relay could be breaking down or the EDC supply signal?
Also following your suggestion would the pump operate via normal key operation
Have you come across this fault mode before?
Kind Regards

It's unusual for a relay to be intermittent, but not impossible. Same for the energising supply from the EDC, unusual, but potentially possible.

I'm not sure. I think the pump will run the whole time the relay is linked out, so would be for testing purposes only.
Have you come across this fault mode before?
Not exactly like that, no.

Afternoon Nodge

Finally got to the cause of the issue - should have started with what you suggested first time the injectors!
Carried out leak test and all were found to be equal with no variance
Changed LP pump/filter and air flow meter ran the car perfect
A few days later on a longish journey the symptom reappeared again
This time the injectors were pulled and found quite an unusual fault on of them

Bearing in mind all four were reconditioned by a Bosch agent in Germany it surprising how the injector passed quality control
Suffice to say we have now obtained replacement from the agent installed in the car and tried several long journeys and can finally say the car is now cured

Appreciate your help along the way!!
