Is it normal when starting the defender first thing in the morn for it to give a few puffs of white smoke ??
 
If it is literally a 'puff' then that's fine - its a characteristic of the engine, and indirect injection into the preheat chambers. If it puffs away for ages then that may need looking at.

Mine puffs white for about 2-3 seconds then is completely clear, some back smoke when accelerating hard but other than that should be clear - this indicates good fuel combustion.

Hi it literally is just for a few seconds did the timing belt and advanced the timing a bit seems to have helped it a bit as well. Just got fuel filter to do which I hear is a pig due to having to re bleed the system ......
 
If it's only for a few seconds it should be OK.

Fill your filter with fuel before you fit it, then initially bleed the system with your injector pipes off.
 
Just did mine on the 110. Put a pan underneath it as it will spill Diesel everywhere as you undo it - or at least I did so. A cut-off gallon bottle would be good for this - leave the handle, stick it over the filter and drop the whole lot into the jug for transport to the workbench.

Pick out the O-rings, swap them out, fit the new cartridge and then use the fuel priming lever to fill the filter after undoing the hollow bolt holding the fuel return line. When Diesel comes out, tighten the hollow bolt and you should hopefully not have to bleed the pump - I didn't at least.

Not that hard, but a dirty job.

Yeah that's what I did, I didn't have to bleed either. It starts a bit rough first go but then is fine.
 
Will get round to that when I also do sediment filter as I think the sediment one hasn't been touched in a decade judging by the amount of crap around it
