Hi all,

Just want to check before I start pulling injectors, what else could be causing this problem.

2001 TD4 Freelander

Car starts ok, no smoke and an even idle.

take it up to 2000rpm and the engine starts to miss a little and there is a fair amount of white smoke.

Disconnect each injector in turn and it has an equal effect on the engine

Egr is bypassed and bmw type vortex fitted

any other ideas gents?

regards

Tom

White smoke can be an indication of over fueling, check the intercooler hoses aren't closing up or holed first as the turbo generally kicks in at around 2000 rpm on small car type diesels.

Hi nickcc,

Thanks for the reply.

Would the holed hoses also contribute to rough running at that speed?

Hello Tom

As Rhodie says, this is a common problem on the TD4 due to oil contamination (the hoses swell and close up on high revs) also the hoses rub on the engine metalwork and wear through.

Hi Guy's'

Nick, I checked the hoses, no holes and not collapsing, however new fault!

the battery/charging lamp has started to flicker on and off! at idle it is off!
and intermittent further up the rev range.

Aggh! could be looking at an electrical fault? what are the symptoms of a bad MAF?

back to the drawing board:(

Try disconnecting the MAF plug and see if the fault goes away, if it does (the ECU will use the preset values) then this can point to a faulty MAF.

Hi Nick,

Ok, have disconected the MAF, ran the car still have white smoke!

I did only run it for a few mins, how long does the ECU take to reset? would it be worthwhile cleaning the MAF?

Oh yes, the flickering charging light, well, that was just to let me know the battery was on the way out.

Cheers

Tom

Hi Guys,

Has anybody found a solution to this as I have the same symptoms with my freelander. I have found after doing a leak back test that one of the injectors wasn't giving as much fuel back as the rest so have one on order.

Thanks in advance

Mark
