Hi all, was driving along today with the window down and noticed whining.
I told the missus to shut up but the noise was still there.

Any suggestions on how to further narrow down where it's coming from? It's a 200tdi and it seems to mainly happen when I accelerate in 2nd or 3rd to about 2500 rpm and then let it slow down again without changing gear.

I'm going to grease my props and change both gear box oils for a start anyway, just wondered if there were any usual suspects?

I think it is the turbo because it's not there when coasting and it's not there when revving the engine in neutral. It's definitely a new noise and different from the usual whooshing turbo noise. Could it be the early signs of something bad, and is there anything I can do about it?

Also, can a dodgy turbo cause a little blue smoke in the exhaust? I've noticed this recently too, but it's only a tiny amount since the oil level hasn't moved much in the last 6 weeks.

It's done 170k and as far as I know the turbo has never been touched.

Cheers

With the comment about blue smoke it's sounding more & more like turbo issus to me.

Before you change the gearbox oils, may I suggest you do the axles, I've just done all the fluids on my wife's Tdi Disco and the biggest improvement in noise-reduction was from the axles oil change.

OK narrowed it down a bit. It only does it when the engine has warmed up, and it does it when sticking yer head in the engine and finger revving.

The noise comes in when the engine speeds up, stays if the revs are maintained and drops off again with engine speed.

It seems to be coming from the front of the engine either the top pulley or the fan. WD40ing the general area improved but didn't eliminate the noise.

Cambelt was changed about 18 months ago so that should be fine.

Bearings?

Hi Woot, beginning to sound like a bearing. You could take off the alternator/fan belt, this would allow you to test the water pump, pas pump and alternator for worn bearings.

You don't think it could be the belt itself do you, belts especially worn ones can make the noises you describe. If you have one in stock, take off the old one, check for bearing wear, clean all the pulleys and then put a new one on.
