hi there i recently purchased a 1998 freelander and the drive train was quite noisy with a bit of whining and vibration at certain revs and it seemed to be mainly coming from the rear. i did a few searches and saw the obvious problems so i removed the prop front to back including the viscous coupling. the vibration has gone but now and again while slowing down there is a loud whine which again seems to be coming from the back of the car, the whinining before removal of the prop was constant at low revs but completely cleared up above 70mph i havent taken it above 70 yet without the prop shaft fitted but its concerning me about the intermittant whining when decelerating and the landy is under warranty so was wondering on peoples thoughts of what steps i could take to isolate where the whine is coming from. the car has only covered 59,000 miles and has alot of service history one receipt shows rear diff mount replacement and labour for rear diff fitting but was wondering if it could be the rear diff if it only whines under deceleration as it has no drive at the moment or if it could be wheel bearings????????? please help

It could be a number of things, but if its under warranty why not let them sort it? Stick the prop back on and dont tell them you took it off, or they will probably say it invalidates your warranty!

Whining from the back is usually caused by the Mother-in-Law, but happens more on speeding up than slowing down:D

Sounds like the I.R.D unit or Transfer box rear output bearing, but make sure it has correct fluid ( synthetic is the latest recommended fluid but if you have a 98MY vehicle, it could be " BLACK " as mine was, this is the original " FACTORY FILL " and needs changing. ( 1.1 litre or 2 pints )

Could be uneven wear on the tyres..... I had this problem and it almost sounded like a wheel bearing at the rear. After changing tyres no more noise. Edges were worn with a saw tooth like effect. This is caused by the IRD ratio being incorrect in the older models, and as a result a "dragging" effect on the rear wheels. Local Landy dealer says they rotate tyres crosswise (right rear to left front, etc.) to gve all tyres some sort of even wear (if that makes sense....). Also always put new tyres on rear wheels if only replacing two (according to L/Rover - see owners manual). After taking prop off, the noise is less, but still there until new tyres are fitted.
