Whining noise...not PS pump. What is it?!

Hi all,

I'm beginning to really dislike FLs!

Had a very noisy whine coming from the engine area (2000 model Td4), linked to engine speed. Common diagnosis was PS pump, so bought a new one, got it fitted, and the noise is still there! Aahh!!!

The LR specialist who did the work said that when the belt powering the PS pump was off, the noise went, so it must be either the Water Pump or the Alternator.

They would put their money on the Water pump, but be interested to hear what anybody else thinks, as the noise sounds more hydraulic (apparently!).

Cheers,

Oscar

you could confirm or eliminate the AC pulley being at fault by removing the drive belt.
at least it will narrow the options a bit.

Sorry to be thick, but could you elaborate....

I presume you mean air conditioning pulley? Is this linked to the belt driving the PS pump, water pump and alternator?

No on td4s (if that's what you have) the air conditioning compressor has it's own drive belt. the pulley bearings do go noisy so i was just suggesting that you could eliminate that as the source of the whine.

Even though the whine goes when the belt driving the pumps and alternator is removed and the engine revved?

but did they remove just the auxiliary belt or both belts. if it was just the auxiliary then it can't be Ac pulley

what's the mileage?

would of thought the water pump would be starting to leak if bearings had gone. any coolant loss?

Good question - I think just the auxiliary belt. I'll check tomorrow.

Mileage is 95,000

No coolant loss at all. The whining has been going on for 6 months or so if that helps, and getting louder.

Cheers,

Oscar

I think your at the mercy of the skills and ability of whoever is doing the job. They should be able to assess by spinning by hand and checking for lift in each pulley, certainly with the AC pulley and alternator they can feel really ropey when turned, the same would apply to tensioner pulley etc. Personally I haven't had a water pump go noisy before leaking but I suppose there is always a first. Sorry it's not much help I know.

Chaser,

Thanks again for the reply. I didn't get round to ringing the garage today, I will do it tomorrow and advise accordingly.

I think I will take to a LR dealer and have their free 'Health Check' (if they're still doing it?!), and see what they say...may even get a free diagnosis!!

Can anybody tell me what on a Td4 the drive belt runs. Good picture here...

Land Rover Owner :: View topic - td4 aux belt route

Obviously the Alternator - easy
The PS pump - item above alternator
The tensioner - black circle to left of PS pump with hexagonal centrepiece

Not sure what the following are:

Extreme top left item (black circle)
Silver circle item below what I think tensioner is (possibly water pump?)
Biggest black circle middle-left? (think engine PTO)

Thanks all...
