Whining alternator

My newish alternator has developed an annoying whine and before shelling my Xmas money I was wondering is there a cure...or is it better to buy a new one? If I buy a new one which, in your opinion, is the best for a standard none modified family Disco?

depending how new and if you have the receipt id go back to where you bought it and see what they say

Failing that try soaking it i with duck oil or wd40 to see if that helps

Yeah loosened it already...it's now too lose...but still whining, not as bad. I'll try the wd40 soak but probably have to live with until after Xmas!

One thing worth considering is ,are you sure its the alternator thats making the noise ?

Had a noisy tensioner on my 306 hdi (it has two) i took the belt off and one felt rougher than the other and when spraying that one with duck oil with car running the noise went so i changed it ,the noise was still there so i ended up changing both !

Either way i wouldnt worry as long as theres no play it should be fine for a while

I had a high pitch whining on mine it turned out to be the fan blade on it just catching the bracket ,a little rub with a file cured it ,might be worth checking
