Hi All,
My 06 147k miles FL1 TD4 seemingly has developed a whine. It more noticeable in lower gears at lower speeds. Noticeable too when letting the clutch off after changing up. 2k rpm seems to be it’s ‘sweet spot’ and below 1750 and above 2250 rpm it’s gone. It’s also absent by the time I’m in 4th and 5th at above 2.5k rpm. Whether it’s actually gone or masked by road, wind etc noise I can’t tell. It seems to be more towards the front than the rear and according to my brother it can be heard from the outside.
Your advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated and also pointers to any relevant thread too.
Cheers,
Michael.

Thanks Alteredtech and Rank Amateur.
I should’ve also added that it’s not there when in neutral and I revv the engine, so I’m assuming it’s a transmission issue. :(

When was the gearbox oil last changed?
The Getrag gearbox can suffer main shaft bearing wear if oil changes are neglected.

Thanks Nodge,
Short answer is I don’t know. I don’t have any service history or service book just the ‘it’s had a service’ from the place I bought it. Anyway the usual service items are ordered and the plan is to replace IRD, gearbox and diff fluids quite soon, along with the PCV and check/ clean of the EGR. I’ve just today checked under the IRD/gearbox and there seems to be a fluid leak from the point where the prop shaft goes off to the VCU. So, it’s going for the whine investigation on Thursday so I’m now bracing myself for some bad IRD news. Depending on Thursdays outcome will determine how soon the other stuff gets done, but it will be done as I think the FL is great and apart from this is in remarkably good nick. I’ve looked at the price of reconditioned IRD’s and IMO it’s worth doing rather than scrapping it. Time will tell….
Cheers,
Michael.

Hi,

Since there is no history, then get a workshop manual, follow each step, to do a full service, don't miss anything.
Once done you will have a better idea on what need to be done.

Thanks Alteredtech, any particular recommendations or is it still Haynes?
Haynes isn't too bad for the FL1, but they're hopeless for more modern vehicles.
Rave is the LR service information pack, which you should be able to download from several places on this forum.

Anyways, the FL is fully recovered. New auxiliary tensioner and auxiliary and air on belts replaced. Quiet as a mouse now.:)
Thanks to all who took the time to answer.
