Hi folks, first Range Rover just purchased 2 weeks ago, 1999 "V" 4.0 SE. Great car no real probs but have an annoying noise and wondered if any of you experts or long time owners might be able to shed some light on it.

When under light acceleration from a stand still or in town and gently accelerating in either first or second gear there is a whining sound from around the passenger side of the transmission tunnel ?? ( i think its from there ) As soon as I put the foot down further on the accelerator it vanishes and you dont hear it again until low speed or take off under gentle acceleration.

Thought it might be transfer box but I believe there have been others on here with the same problem.

Thanks for all assistance, this is a great forum which makes some great reading.

cheers
Rob

I generally start with the easy things, belts and bearings. Next wheels and hubs. Next differentials, propshaft and so on. Too many choices based on the info you've given. Also mine's a manual. If your's is auto then there may be gearbox issues I know nothing about.

If you ever get a whining noise from the passenger side on hard acceleration. Place Duct tape over Wifes/Girlfriends/Partners mouth, it helps.
