Which way do you have the top of your snorkel?

So, thoughts on this?

I often see people driving round with the top of their snorkel facing backwards, I guess I understand doing this when driving slowly through lots of muddy water type places, but surely you'd want it front facing when driving on the roads at speed so that the air gets pushed into it?

So, I have mine facing forward when on the road, then turn it round when off road.

But does it make that much difference?

The 'ram air' effect is non-existant on something about 3" diameter, especially if it doesn't have any aerodynamic flow built in, other than the curve to physically place it where it needs to be, and also has an airbox and air filter in the way, until it gets to about 80+ mph .. and even then it'll be negligible.

I reckon it really makes no odds in (properly measureable) performance which way the head faces .. Mine faces diagonally .. ;)

Keep in mind there is a difference between a Snorkel and a raised air intake. Despite what the sellers are saying.

Turn it backwards in sand or dust but thats it.

As mentioned the air ram effect wont make a difference until 80mph+ at least, the turbo will suck more air in.

if the turbo is sucking in the air, will having it facing backwards stop it from sucking in sand / dust? i'm not sure if that will make a difference either :s

really?

Not so much, but when moving forward with the snorkle facing back its out the way of the majority of the kicked up dust.

I never thought there was any difference, by sealing a raised air intake it effectively becomes a snorkle.

Raised air intake as used on Army wolf has no front or back (STC 50265), so on that basis, pointing to rear full time is probably not an issue

Yes, I suspect they have blurred the lines now but raised air intake always was a lot less wade suitable than a true snorkel.
From another forum :

The Snorkel 'mushroom' type will take a direct water hit as the air intake holes are underneath the mushroom. You'll notice the G4 Land Rovers use this arrangement with snorkels supplied by Mantec. I believe these also have a filter in the top on true versions.

The Safari-type snorkels/ (Raised air intakes) use a front ram-air scoop for air intake. This has the benefit of enabling the snorkel to suck in cleaner air rather than the dirtier stuff at bonnet level, and you'll receive a mild performance boost from the ram-air effect. They won't be terribly good when faced with a water blast from the front, but you'd have to be going some to achieve this. Generally, the ram-air scoops are reversible though.

I dunno about you but I have had water well over the bonnet and above the north seal of the windscreen.

Most are branded raised air intakes now as they don't in many cases "not all" have the water sealing/consideration the original snorkel lines did.

ah, i see.

I have a raised air intake then, but it is all sealed too so I could happily go through very deep water
Aye, 90 percent are worded raised air intake now but some still use snorkel. I suspect it was more to do with iiiiiijits claiming after dunking their pride and joy. But there are many which don't have a pipe through or genuine extra sealing to cover.. I was tempted a few weeks back but having just looked at how high the normal intake is I decided against it. If I went as high than that I would be full of water which is a whole different story and would be expensive in regards time to rectify.

i'm going to move mine so it faces backwards me thinks ... also, going to have a look in the filter box to see if there's any water accumulated in there from driving in the rain
