Hi I'm new to the forum and looking to buy a cheap used discovery capable of towing two horses and wonder if anyone can advise me please? It doesn't need to be fancy, instead I'm looking for a workhorse that's going to be reliable, up to weight for towing and as cheap to run as possible (which won't be very I know). I don't know what level of mileage I should be discounting or which model/engine type/size is best for my needs. I'm assuming diesal? Any common issues to be aware of? What kind of price I can expect to pay? Any info/advice much appreciated thanks! :)

Define "cheap"!

Cheap to me is really cheap, cheap to someone like @Shimsteriom will be the sort of £20,000 to £30,000 mark, he's a man of means don't ya know ;)

There are 5 Discoveries to choose from in approximately 8 variations with various engines.

Biggest question is how much do you actually have to spend? How much work can you do for yourself in the event of the right vehicle turning up but needing work?

Lots of variables your end it seems but the D1 200Tdi & 300Tdi, D2 Td5 and D3 TDV6 are all within easy enough reach for modest budgets £5k and under, all will tow 3.5T and the newer they are the easier it is for them to do so.

All comes down to cash and how much you have to spend.

PS Welcome to the mad house.

Yes safe to say I'm not a mechanic in any way, shape or form! I should imagine the older models are less complicated for a mechanic to work on though?

Disco 1 would get my vote, but they rot and require good maintenance..

If you're to own \any LR you'll have to savvy up with the spanners.

Just a quickie. What is the weight of your horses and trailer. Have you checked the loaded weight of trailer?

Just do an internet search on cars for sale websites (Auto trader , guru, ebay etc) and set your search parameters to your maximum budget of £3k and you will probable see that your only choices will be Discovery 1 or 2 (you want a diesel) Ideally you need to take someone with you who know about LRs as there is such a vast array of qualities out there. Some will be heading to the scrap yard before too long and others may be well preserved and a good long term investment but if you don't know about the vehicles you could well get stung unfortunately. Old LR ownership is a minefield. Chassis corrosion is the biggest and most expensive thing to be avoided, the mechanicals are all relatively simple and parts in plentiful supply.
