The one that comes with a new cam, cam followers, pushrodes, rockers and
timing chain. Oil alone isn't going to make a difference.

How about ear defender's I could do with a pair of those noise cancelling
headphones when I am driving :)

I shove the cheapest Halfords oil in, don't want to waste my money on
anything else considering it does not stay there long.

You really meant it when you said your land rover was rust and holes!

If there is a problem it really should be fixed, but if it's just a bit of
old age creeping in..... Morris Oils 20w/50 Ring Free can make V8's sound
a lot happier.

It's not that bad, sounds like a one bad tappet to me, don't really want to go nuts just yet!

Hi Nige,
Check you haven't got a loose spark plug - you'll get a similar noise. Seem
to have a knack of either seizing in or working loose sometimes on aluminium
heads.

decent 15W50 if you can get it, or 20W50. 's not easy to get either, not if
you take the "decent" into consideration. Early (pre-76) ones are
definitely happier on 20W50.

I'm running mine on Castrol GTX "for high mileage engines". bloody dumbing
down the oil now as well.

You never heard this from me, it's not the sort of thing a mechanic
would do, but it works. At your own risk - throw half a litre of ATF in
with the oil - it's really good at shutting up noisy lifters.

But what are the side effects if any?

None that I'm aware of. There's plenty of mechanics (me included)
who've done this to shut up tappets and I've never heard any horror
stories. It's much less agressive than many of the additives to quieten
tappets so it doesn't loosen all the crap sitting around inside the
motor as much.

Same trick with EP90 for hiding those annoying big-end knocks...

Make sure you use a Landrover plug spanner, or at least a very very thin
walled plug socket as anything else will result in the thread being threaded
when you tighten the plug due to the limited access.

I've a normal socket-set style plug spanner with about 1/4" or so length at
the end ground down thin, for this reason.
