Hi

I'm in the market for a used gearbox for my 4.0l auto (1999).

What year gearbox do I have to look for to allow a straight swap?

Cheers

*bump*

someone must know...

will any P38 auto gearbox from a 4/4.6 fit my 99 4.0?

thanks in advance

The 4HP22E was fitted to the 4.0 P38 RR and the 4HP24E fitted to the 4.6 so there is a plate on the side which tells you which you have. The 24 basically was able to handle more torque
(but I don't know if ratio's are different or torque convertor)

The E suffix is for the electronic control version.

Be careful not to buy a diesel box with right model number The valving on the control block (inside the gearbox) will be different as the torque and rev characteristics are different for the V8 and the diesel as is the torque convertor (I think from reading mostly stall speed).

Cheers, much appreciated. So any autobox from a 4.0 P38 will def be ok, but we're not sure about the 4.6. I can now start looking.

I wouldn't go for a manual anymore, not after experiencing the auto.

To be 100% check your model plate, ask for the model and state it must have come out a 4.0 auto.
What you do not want is to be fobbed off with one from a diesel or worse still a BMW as it will not operate correctly.

Oh and if possible use a online free equiv of find a part or use ebay and pay by credit card.

Get them to state in writing-either email or ebay the mileage and how long the warranty is. expect between 30 and 90 days
