Which Freelander to buy - sub £6,000?

Just moved to the country and looking for a 4 wheel drive and looking at Land rovers but am am novice:

- seen a 2005 Freelander 1.8 XEI 3 dr 29,000 miles - great condition for £5,948- looks great but seems a bit expensive?
- also why are Freelander 2.0 TD HSE more expensive than the 1.8's?
- any key things I should look out for?

Search the site using the search button (above)between new posts and quick links.
type in freelander problems or summat like that and read very carefully ;)

then type in discovery and add the word "rust" to the search :)

So the options are:

Freelander - You wont have 4WD for long and your doors will fall off

Discovery - Luxury offroading but you will need to buy a welder

Defender - Will go anywhere but will be a cold, leaky, miserable existence

So to summarise, buy a Shogan...

- also why are Freelander 2.0 TD HSE more expensive than the 1.8's? the 1.8 petrol is a **** engine known for head failures and a hse is top of therange xei is mid range the diesel is the better engine by a long way
- any key things I should look out for? doors still attached VCU not ****ed and the 3 amigos

in short i would get either a a disco defender or rr classic, rr will be amazing but thirsty or tractor sounding and magic carpet luxury disco not far off but both will need a bit of welding defender will be solid but its not luxury its a farm truck that will outlive both thedisco and rr

the k-series engine develops more power than the diesel and is much much lighter

it is quicker than the doozle

the XEI is high spec

All the K-series are weak engines, liners slip, headgaskets blow, dowels melt. They are great engines as you said power/weight wise but in the real world they are rubbish...

not rubbish

serviceable, if looked after

and no worse than any other engine IMHO


EDIT: i am basing this on my own experience with my engine....it has been said that mine is a "good one"

liner slip is exaggerated on forums, ie they don't do it a lot.
headgaskets do go but they do on lots of other engines anorl.

never heard of the dowels melting tbh.

if looked after they are a brill motor

of late all i see is big probs with the kraut TD4 engine, now theres a basket case IMHO and expensive to repair

The K series is reknown for it throughout the industry, we have done plenty over the years and have seen a high proportion of rovers suffer this fate compared to other engines, it doesnt mean they all will but it is a really bad design fault.

The dowels melting is down to the use of plastic alignment dowles in the head, these use to go out of line and pul the head off center, was a problem they fixed later.

Dont get me wrong, the K-series is a fantastic engine, its just got a major flaw, if it wasn't for that then it would have been one of the most popular engines of all time...

As for the new TD4, well, all new engines are rubbsih as its al eletrical crap trying to control emissions and that stuff, the TD4 is a bit worse than most but they are all as bad...

They are rubbish.

I have literally lost count of the number of people I know first hand who have had hgf. If they make it past 60,000 miles without hgf it's a miracle

mine has had all the necessary upgrades or mods.. etc

i'll keep servicing it and checking it regulary and hopefully it won't detonate

Pour a bottle of K-Seal in the coolant, the amount of these engines I have fixed with this, we had one as a courtesy car which we bought with HG failure, a bottle of K-seal and it went for another 3 years!!

Its not a mileage related thing, alot of these engines easily make it past 100K, its more when they have got a little warm through either lack of coolant (1L less coolant cant add an extre few degress to the temp) or being worked very hard, they are fine until this point and then the internals shift. If you see the inside of one you will see why, the liners mate to the head and there is only about 5mm of wall thickness before the waterjacket
