Any advice on the correct oil to be used in the p38 4.6.

have heard lots of conflicting advice. one person saying that if the engine was last filled with semi synthetic, ensure to completely flush if using mineral oil, and vice versa.

Also, has anyone else got a yellowy type liquid for coolant.
Could it be what main dealers use.I am thinking of replacing with new bog standard antifreeze at 50%.

Thanks in advance.

Yellowy?? Are you sure its yellow and not the colour of your header tank your seeing?? The stuff in my P38 looks red. When you actually go and buy the coolant from the main dealer it actually comes out of the container bright orange. You then mix it accordingly with water.

The coolant from the dealer is stupidly expensive by the way, I went down to Halfords when my Clio needed some coolant last Sunday and got their premium coolant stuff. When I poured it out it was bright orange just like the LR offical stuff. When reading the labels on the back from what I can tell they are practically identical.

What I have read is that some P38's had the green coloured coolant in and that you should never mix the orange stuff and the green. How true this is I dont know.

If in doubt just ring up your local LR dealer and ask for parts and ask the question about the coolant you should put in, i.e. orange or green. Its what i'd do.

As far as oil goes in my opinion this engine was designed to have lots of oil thrown around it and is best suited to standard oil thats regularly changed.
Nerding owner international did have it in which they suggested but i can't find it at the mo. Hopefully someone else will give a viscosity cus i can't find my can either. I try and change it every 6,000 miles though.

Cheers, Nick.

4.0 and 4.6 should use castrol 10/40 or 10/30, Green coolant upto 2000 model year and red (OAT) coolant in 2001 onwards, dont mix it, you can use the red coolant in early models as they all had the same engines but drain all the green out first.
